Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Grapples with Performance Woes
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin may soon reveal their acquisition of Newey.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be free to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
"At Monza, Alonso commented that there are still just rumors and that the responsibility to resolve issues doesn't fall on a single person."
“It’s about evaluating our current situation and ongoing projects. We need to identify what’s progressing well, what isn’t, and make plans to improve things by 2025.”
If Newey is available next year, he could supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into establishing a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, in the meantime, the outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all each weekend.”
"An inspired weekend, just like the one I’m having, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This season, Lance and I have consistently finished races with just a two or three-second gap between us, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those occasions where I performed slightly better, felt really good about the car, and pushed its limits, perhaps even beyond 100%. That effort earned me 11th place."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"Being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to step up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being last to securing a podium finish in just four months, illustrating significant progress."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on par with them for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the car's current performance is lacking and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also unsatisfactory."
“I believe that unless we introduce new components, significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely.”
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we'll face."
