Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges.
Fernando Alonso maintains that solving Aston Martin's issues will require more than just a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his role early next year, after which he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe that resolving the issues isn’t the responsibility of a single person,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's about assessing our current situation and production. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year would enable him to guide the 2026 car development for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine for the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather discouraging.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin ahead of their major push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend like this, when I'm feeling particularly motivated, I understand that my efforts will remain entirely unseen."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently been very close in performance, often finishing races within just two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I had a slight edge. I felt really good about the car and was pushing its limits, arguably beyond 100%, which earned me an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is a clear sign that we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, saying, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, providing a clear example."
“Additionally, Mercedes had the same starting conditions as we did. We were on par with Mercedes for the initial four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, "Unless we get an upgrade for the car, the current performance is insufficient."
"Fell short in Monza. Didn't meet expectations in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary."
"I don't foresee significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what's at stake. They're giving it their all. We remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
