Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
Alonso states, "I don’t believe in making excuses," as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, even as speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement persists.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin may reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented that the information remains speculative and emphasized that solving the issues is not the responsibility of a single individual.
"It's primarily about what we currently possess and what we are creating. It's about recognizing what's progressing positively, identifying what's not, and making efforts to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 vehicle for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. Alonso secured 11th place in the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin to make a significant push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, much like this one, I am certain that it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently been very close in performance, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or I am. This weekend was one of those times when I performed slightly better. I felt really good about the car and pushed it perhaps even beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Certainly, it's a letdown. We must remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are the best and are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to respond."
"McLaren went from being in last place to earning a spot on the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We were on par with them for the first four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that without improvements to the car, the current performance is inadequate.
“Performance fell short at Monza. It wasn’t up to par at Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either.
"I don't anticipate any significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we stay together and continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly gained two, and that's the challenge we face."
