Education Secretary Gillian Keegan humorously remarked about the possibility of seeking new employment soon, as she stands at risk of being among the most notable Conservative figures to lose in the upcoming elections.

It is anticipated that the cabinet minister will be defeated in her Chichester constituency in West Sussex by the Liberal Democrats, who are targeting the traditional Conservative strongholds in the south of England.

While touring a school in her district, Ms. Keegan faced a question from students about her career choice if she weren't serving as an MP.

"She mentioned she could possibly respond to that inquiry by next Friday."

Ms. Keegan expressed to the PA news agency that the poll results were highly inconsistent, stating, "I've never taken anything for granted in my entire life."

Her initial response captures the pessimistic sentiment among some Conservatives, as several surveys indicate a major shift in the UK's political scene, positioning Labour for a potentially significant victory.

Ms. Keegan is among over twelve prominent individuals facing the possibility of a "Portillo moment"—a term coined after Michael Portillo, the Conservative minister whose unexpected election defeat occurred as Tony Blair rose to power in 1997.

Cabinet ministers seldom lose their seats during elections, however, forecasts indicate that along with Ms. Keegan, several other prominent figures such as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, and Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt may also face defeat in the upcoming elections, along with numerous other notable members of their ranks.

Ms. Keegan secured her seat in the 2017 election, winning by a substantial margin of 21,000 votes

Historically, Chichester has been a bastion for the Conservative Party; however, recent projections from a YouGov MRP poll suggest the Liberal Democrats are poised to capture the seat in the upcoming election on July 4.

The education secretary, renowned for her straightforward talk, has come under fire for using profanity during a tirade about the RAAC crisis and humorously stating that she might have "punched" an Ofsted inspector.

In a candid assessment shared with Sky News earlier Friday, she expressed skepticism about the Conservative Party's prospects in the upcoming election, noting that current polls do not forecast the most favorable results for the party, and acknowledging that there is significant frustration directed at the Conservatives for numerous reasons.

This reflects a common feeling among other Conservatives who seem to have nearly conceded loss.

It is believed that Northern Ireland Minister Steve Baker is preparing to initiate a campaign to succeed Rishi Sunak, contingent on the prime minister stepping down following a potential party defeat.

He acknowledged that it is "generally anticipated" that he will lose his position in Wyaukee, where his lead is a mere 4,214 votes.

Other Conservative members have begun cautioning the electorate about the risks of Labour achieving an overwhelming majority, emphasizing the need for a strong opposition.

In the early stages of the campaign, Mr. Shapps expressed that asserting the Conservatives are headed for a win would be akin to "denying the obvious truth."

Mr. Sunak, on the other hand, continues to stay positive and maintains that the Tories still have a chance to triumph.
