Reviews of the Civic Hybrid and Polestar 3, a $25,000 Jeep electric vehicle, and the latest on Tesla's 4680 battery: This Week's Highlights
What roles are AI playing in the electric vehicles from BMW and VW?
Why are legislators resisting the inclusion of electric vehicles in fleet efficiency regulations?
Here’s our recap of the past week at Green Car Reports, reviewing the highlights as of June 15, 2024.
This week, Green Car Reports shared their initial reactions to two new models that blend efficiency with enjoyable driving. Their review of the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid highlighted its affordability and fuel efficiency, ranking it superior to the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. It offers a quieter and more engaging ride compared to the standard Civic, delivering nearly 50 miles per gallon without sacrifices. Additionally, their analysis of the 2025 Polestar 3 praised its exceptionally comfortable seating, though noted the user interface could be improved with its hard-to-read fonts and complex steering wheel controls. The vehicle accommodates five passengers and excels in both ride quality and construction, surpassing the Tesla Model Y Performance. However, with a cost exceeding $25,000 more than the Tesla, even before considering Tesla’s tax benefits, the premium price is expected.

According to a recent investor presentation by Stellantis, an electric Jeep priced at $25,000 will be launched in the U.S. market as the 2027 Jeep Renegade EV. CEO Carlos Tavares revealed that the vehicle will utilize LFP battery cells to maintain the affordable price point.
Chevrolet has reduced the starting prices for its 2025 Blazer EV LT and RS models, however, there's a caveat. The features that were standard in previous models will now be available as optional extras in the 2025 Chevy Blazer EV. Additionally, more affordable front-wheel-drive LT models and the high-performance SS are expected to join the range soon.
2025 VW ID.4
Volkswagen has announced that the enhancements introduced to the VW ID.4 in 2024, such as increased power, extended driving range, and a significantly upgraded interface, will persist into the 2025 model. Additionally, the company plans to expand the integration of its ChatGPT-powered digital voice assistant across more models in its lineup.
Nissan is issuing a recall for a limited batch of its Ariya EV models due to an unusual issue for electric vehicles: an oil leak. This problem stems from a defect in manufacturing that could cause oil to leak in the drive motors, possibly resulting in increased wear. To address this, Nissan plans to replace the drive-motor assembly in the 84 vehicles impacted by this issue.
The Nissan Leaf is no longer eligible for the $3,750 electric vehicle tax credit. Although the 2024 models available at dealerships can still benefit from this incentive, the virtually identical 2025 Nissan Leaf does not qualify. This fluctuation in tax credit eligibility is not new, and Nissan is collaborating with their supplier AESC to regain the tax benefit for what is considered one of the most economically priced electric vehicles on the market.

At Thursday's shareholder meeting, where a historic compensation plan was approved, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk hinted at three outstanding new electric vehicles under development, emphasizing their affordability. Notably, he did not mention the Tesla Roadaster. Musk also admitted that Tesla has yet to realize the significant cost savings it had anticipated from its new 4680 battery cell technology, first introduced during the 2020 Battery Day event. Currently, it remains more cost-effective for Tesla to purchase battery cells from external suppliers.
Battery leasing is considered a potential way to reduce the cost of electric vehicles (EVs), yet it hasn't been implemented widely in the U.S. On Thursday, Honda revealed a partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation aimed at lowering the prices of Honda EVs, initially in Japan. This raises the question: might this approach help bring cost-effective Honda EVs to the American market?

Last week, the federal government released the latest fuel efficiency standards for 2027-2031, which are less stringent for trucks and SUVs compared to earlier proposals. The expected real-world fleet average is now set at around 38 mpg, down from the initial 43.5 mpg suggested in July 2023. Additionally, the postponement in updating the calculation method for electric vehicle (EV) efficiency versus gasoline-powered vehicles could further advantage automakers, allowing them to produce fewer EVs while still meeting targets.
Last week, Virginia's Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that the state will not adhere to the latest emission standards set by California, which includes the electric vehicle (EV) mandate and the structured targets for EV sales adoption. This decision halts the progression towards requiring that 35% of all new vehicles sold in Virginia be electric by 2026, potentially increasing the number of less fuel-efficient vehicles available at Virginia's car dealerships.
Recent survey findings indicate that Tesla's Supercharger network may be losing its competitive advantage, and this comes even before the company has implemented widespread reductions in this area. According to a recent J.D. Power survey focused on public charging satisfaction, the Tesla Supercharger network's performance hasn't deteriorated; rather, competing networks are improving and closing the gap. Meanwhile, following a pause in Tesla's Supercharging expansion, a new contender, Ionna, is emerging. Backed by seven car manufacturers, Ionna plans to launch its first charging stations in the U.S. in 2024, aiming to establish 20,000 high-power charging points in urban areas and near highways. Ionna intends to accommodate both the NACS interface, which is based on Tesla's design and will soon be adopted by its supporting automakers, as well as the CCS interface currently used by most new EVs.
Tesla's Rapid Charging Station
Porsche has expanded its charging network for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids by incorporating thousands of ChargePoint EV charging stations into its offerings. This enhancement enables users of the Porsche app to connect with 75% of compatible chargers across the U.S. This update comes just before Porsche is set to broaden its range of electric vehicles with the addition of the Macan Electric and the Taycan. Users can now make payments directly through the Porsche app, which supports both Level 2 destination chargers and DC fast-charging options.
The U.S. Treasury Department has reported that the majority of electric vehicle (EV) purchasers are choosing to apply their federal EV tax credit at the time of purchase. It was disclosed on Wednesday that 90% of new EV buyers eligible for the credit in 2024 are taking advantage of it immediately, and 80% of those eligible for used EV purchases are doing the same.

In its latest electric vehicle (EV) sales forecast, Bloomberg New Energy Finance identifies plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as a potential unpredictable factor affecting future oil consumption. As PHEVs regain popularity, and with findings indicating that only 11-54% of their mileage is driven using electric power, the shift towards buying PHEVs over EVs could potentially increase oil demand beyond what is currently anticipated. Moreover, there are concerns about whether these vehicles will be charged as frequently as needed if they are primarily introduced to meet regulatory demands.
A cohort of GOP Senators is resisting tougher emissions regulations that are anticipated to boost electric vehicle (EV) sales, by scrutinizing how EVs are factored into overall fleet efficiency metrics. At present, EVs are assigned a disproportionately high value which encourages car manufacturers, as each EV sold allows for the sale of numerous less efficient vehicles. Given this scenario and the recent introduction of less stringent emissions goals by the Biden administration, one might wonder if automakers are inclined to abandon these calculations.
BMW's Vision Neue Klasse X Prototype
BMW is incorporating artificial intelligence in its forthcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles to create interior designs and patterns, essentially serving as a tool to inspire mood boards that still necessitate the involvement of professional designers and engineers. The question remains, when will the need for these human elements diminish?
