Local star Aleix Espargaro secures a thrilling win in the 2024 Catalan MotoGP Sprint following Francesco Bagnaia's last-lap fall from the front.
Bagnaia became the third racer to crash out from the front position, following previous mistakes by Raul Fernandez and Brad Binder.
Bagnaia's mishap at Turn 5, which caught the current world champion off-guard and stranded in the gravel, subsequently restored Pedro Acosta to a podium position, just after the newcomer had been overtaken for third place by Marc Marquez.
Marquez began from the 14th position due to not advancing beyond the first qualifying session and competed without a winglet, having made contact with Jack Miller in the first turn.
Title contender Jorge Martin, who started seventh due to a crash during qualifying, managed to secure fourth place. Marquez has emerged as Martin's nearest competitor for the world championship title.
For the 12-lap race, every racer chose the medium option for the front tires and the soft option for the rear tires.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, a change from the previous 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the former requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event.
Drivers who do not achieve this minimum in a Grand Prix will incur a 16-second time penalty after the race, or an 8-second penalty for Sprint or shorter races.
