End of the Road: Niccolo Canepa Retires Without Dream Finale in Endurance World Championship
Yamaha veteran bids farewell – dream conclusion remains elusive
A singular journey in motorcycle racing concludes without the storybook ending
Niccolo Canepa concluded his career on Sunday, marking the end of the Endurance World Championship, though he did so without securing the championship title.
In the final race of the FIM Endurance World Championship held at Circuit Paul Ricard, the Suzuki-equipped Yoshimura squad outperformed Yamaha.
This resulted in Canepa being deprived of a storybook ending to his distinctive career.
His Yamaha YART squad was limited to a third-place finish.
Canepa revealed his plans to retire following the Bol d’Or event in France, which is set to determine the winner of the 2024 EWC championship.
Over a span of two decades, the rider from Italy has competed in various motorcycle racing competitions, including MotoGP, WorldSBK, Moto2, WorldSSP, and MotoE.
However, he discovered his genuine passion in endurance racing, securing victories in each of the three prestigious events – Spa, Le Mans, and the Bol d’Or.
Despite his triumph in the previous year's EWC championship, his attempt to secure consecutive titles was unsuccessful.
"Canepa declared this was his final appearance in the EWC."
"The journey has been enjoyable, but sadly, we didn't conclude the race as we had hoped."
"Being here with my teammates and my family is quite moving for me."
"We experienced numerous wonderful times together as well as quite a few challenging ones."
