Emotional Farewell: Toto Wolff Reflects on Lewis Hamilton’s ‘Bruising’ Move to Ferrari
Toto Wolff acknowledges that Lewis Hamilton's departure from Mercedes is "bruising"
"I understand his reasons for leaving. I am at peace with his decision."
Toto Wolff has admitted that Lewis Hamilton's exit from Mercedes was somewhat painful.
Hamilton told the principal and part-owner of the Mercedes F1 team before this season started that it would be their final season together, as he plans to move to Ferrari in 2025.
As a result, this weekend's British Grand Prix will mark Hamilton's last appearance driving for Mercedes at Silverstone.
In an interview with Martin Brundle from Sky Sports, Wolff discussed a particularly difficult aspect of Hamilton's departure.
"It was tough because I had no time to respond," Wolff stated.
"I asked, 'Alright, what's our plan for making this public?'"
"It was evident that the leak originated from Ferrari."
"Imagining myself in his position, he's nearing the end of his career, the team was underperforming, and it's a dream for everyone to don a red suit adorned with a yellow prancing horse. The financial incentives were likely favorable as well."
“I understand the reasons behind his actions. We have a harmonious relationship, and our bond is very strong.”
“For a dozen years, we've stood by each other as friends, partners, and accomplices.
"He'll be an opponent on the track, but we remain friends off it."
"I wasn't able to contact our sponsors and shareholders to inform them about the current situation."
Wolff was questioned about whether Hamilton's attitude has been influenced this season, considering it is his final one with Mercedes.
"This year has been quite positive and productive overall," Wolff responded. "There were times when he was dissatisfied, but it wasn't unlike the previous two years."
He was questioned about whether he would privately hope for good luck for his friend Hamilton in the coming year.
Wolff expressed a preference for victory, stating, "I definitely prefer us coming out on top! This is something we have control over."
"I hope for nothing but the best for him – as long as he's behind us."
At present, Wolff and Hamilton continue to be on the same page.
Mercedes heads to Silverstone fresh off their victory at last weekend’s F1 Austrian Grand Prix, which took place in Red Bull’s home country.
George Russell’s win was significantly influenced by the collision involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Nonetheless, it marks a major advancement for Mercedes, a team that has found it challenging to compete with Red Bull for the past two and a half seasons.
Wolff has promised to secure another grand prix win for Hamilton before he leaves.
