Double Kimi Drama: Raikkonen Weighs In on Antonelli’s Mercedes Promotion During Rare Paddock Return
Kimi Raikkonen shares his thoughts on fellow racer Kimi Antonelli
An uncommon sighting of Kimi Raikkonen in the Formula 1 paddock
There were two individuals named Kimi present in the Formula 1 paddock at Monza.
All eyes were on Kimi Antonelli after he crashed during the first practice session, and it was later announced that he would replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025.
However, ex-Formula 1 titleholder Kimi Raikkonen attended a grand prix, which is an uncommon occurrence for him.
"Yes, I'm aware," Raikkonen mentioned to F1.com regarding the major news from the other Kimi.
"When we arrived, someone mentioned that it had been announced!"
"It's fantastic. We're seeing many fresh faces expected to join next year, with several new drivers signed to Formula 1. This is beneficial for the sport overall, and having an Italian competitor in the championship is a positive development. I believe this is advantageous for everyone involved."
"I'm confident they understand how to prepare him."
"Clearly, nowadays there are simulators available. Back when I began, there were no simulators—you just got in and started!"
“It seems that advancing to Formula 1 is simpler in various aspects nowadays. There are ample opportunities for testing and preparation. I extend my best wishes to them and everyone else involved!”
Nicknamed 'The Iceman,' the veteran driver, who is 26 years senior to the latest F1 racer named Kimi, had a career spanning 19 years over two separate periods.
He secured the drivers’ championship title in 2007 during his time with Ferrari, and he is still the last champion for the Italian team.
Mercedes’ latest addition, Kimi, bears a resemblance to something familiar.
Raikkonen had minimal experience prior to his ascent to Formula 1. Antonelli has quickly progressed to F2 this year and has already secured a spot in F1 for the following year.
Another racing driver with the Raikkonen name is emerging.
The family moved to Italy to support their son Robin's aspirations. Robin is presently involved in go-kart racing.
"Things are going smoothly. We'll find out," remarked Raikkonen Senior.
"Who can say if anything will come of it? The important part is that he’s enjoying himself."
