Die Renaissance der Verbrenner: Mazda, Toyota und Subaru vereinen Kräfte für CO2-neutrale Motorentechnik
Mazda, Toyota, and Subaru are collaborating on engine development, with a continued commitment to Wankel and boxer engines. The focus is on more compact designs, reducing carbon emissions, and integrating into electrified powertrains. Despite the rise of electric vehicles, these automakers, known for their expertise in rotary, hybrid, and boxer engines, are joining forces in a friendly rivalry to push the boundaries of their respective technologies.
In the spirit of a friendly match, the focus is on mutual improvement. Achieving carbon neutrality is the aim: "To present our customers with new options for a carbon-neutral existence, we have to tackle the challenge of creating engines compatible with future energy sources," states Koji Sato, President and CEO of Toyota.
The trio of Japanese automakers is joining forces to engineer motors that are tailor-made for electrified powertrains. The goal is to evolve their design to seamlessly fit into the specific models they power. The focus is on creating more compact structures that would pave the way for innovative packaging options. This strategy is set to unveil new design prospects and enhance the aerodynamic features of the vehicles. Additionally, it aims to help meet the increasingly stringent emission standards imposed by various countries.
It's clear that there are still numerous fans of Wankel and Boxer engines roaming out there, and the three brands have no intention of undermining their unique characteristics. This means Subaru will continue with Boxer engines and Mazda with Wankel engines, all while keeping an eye on reducing CO2 emissions. This appears to be a significant concern for Mazda, Toyota, and Subaru.
Further Information on Wankel and Boxer Engines
Allow me to point out that the term CO2 is mentioned no less than 16 times in the press release, with intentions to cut its levels across supply chains, development, and employment. This raises the question: couldn't we save more CO2 straightaway with the use of purely electric vehicles, utilizing resources that are already at our disposal? Of course, that assumes there's a market for these eco-friendly options.
Mazda continues to focus on niche markets. "Since the rotary engine can be combined with electrified powertrains and carbon-neutral fuels, Mazda is advancing this technology in our new partnership to help make a significant impact towards a carbon-neutral society," stated Masahiro Moro, the Representative Director, President, and CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation.
