Daniel Ricciardo’s Fury: A Missed Strategy Call Ignites Tension at Hungarian Grand Prix
Frustrated Daniel Ricciardo Awaits Acknowledgment of Mistake with an Apology
"This only fueled my anger further…"
Daniel Ricciardo was visibly upset with his team following what he described as one of the most aggravating races he's ever experienced.
Ricciardo secured a ninth-place start at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, hinting at a promising Sunday where he might have been able to exert pressure on Red Bull to consider him as a replacement for the struggling Sergio Perez.
However, RB chose to bring Ricciardo into the pits prematurely, just seven laps in while he was using medium tyres – a tactical decision that he did not concur with. He ended up in 12th place.
"I'm making a real effort to hold back, but you need to understand my thoughts on the initial pit stop," he communicated over the team radio at the Hungaroring.
"Ricciardo mentioned, "We trailed the gentle vehicles inside."
"They've arrived. With an open path ahead, we chose to follow closely and join the DRS line-up.
"I've participated in numerous races and experienced plenty of disappointing ones. But that one ranks highly among them."
"We possessed the speed and essentially handed Yuki the opportunity that lay before us. Both of us were capable of seizing it, yet we failed to do so."
Ricciardo expressed frustration over the poorly timed pit stop, saying, "Truly, the moment I started heading into the pits, I was doubting the decision. However, you can't…
You're summoned during the 13th turn, requiring an immediate response.
"We discuss tactics, yet at the outset, two vehicles overtook us using soft tires. That's okay, we let them pass.
"They opt for a pit stop, and we end up trailing behind, aligning ourselves with their tactics. Had we taken a different route, we would've had an unobstructed path and, from my perspective, the opportunity to execute Yuki's strategy."
"Truthfully, my expectations were higher. During the cool-down lap, I anticipated an apology for our mistake, but it never came."
"That only fueled my anger further."
Ricciardo is a leading contender for a switch with the criticized Perez at Red Bull.
During the summer hiatus, the team behind F1's constructor champions will convene to deliberate on whether to continue with Perez, as confirmed by Helmut Marko.
Ricciardo and Liam Lawson emerge as viable replacements should they decide to move on from the Mexican driver.
This means Ricciardo has just one more opportunity to make an impact, at this weekend's F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
