Daniel Ricciardo comments on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after the two drivers collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo was competing against Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision. This incident pushed Hulkenberg's Haas off the track, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was later handed a 10-second penalty because one of his team members touched his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pitstop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race on home turf for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"At the end of the day, we just didn't have the speed today, penalties aside," he stated.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was really liking the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico in the eighth turn."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space, but when I felt the collision, I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can impact the outcome."
"The car performed adequately, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until now, I aimed to extract the fullest potential from the vehicle."
“From my perspective, I'm feeling much better this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda Leaves Italian GP Feeling 'Frustrated'
According to team representative Laurent Mekies, the Italian Grand Prix for RB was significantly influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. A crash involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I feel quite frustrated. It's disappointing that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained to its floor."
“I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the car was skidding and I just couldn’t control it.
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where we expect our car to perform strongly, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends ahead."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the newly updated RB car at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it could be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, resulting in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have helped us better evaluate the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was handed another 10-second penalty as we failed to properly carry out the initial one."
"We must reassess our protocols in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew has largely performed outstandingly this season."
