Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes After Collision with Nico Hulkenberg at F1 Italian Grand Prix: A Race Marred by Penalties and Frustrations
Daniel Ricciardo comments on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the event involving Haas at the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided during the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull's Ricciardo was competing against Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of the Monza race on Sunday when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – which resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt and giving up a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was subsequently given a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at the pitstop.
Ricciardo finished a difficult race at his home track in 13th place for the Red Bull team.
"In the end, we simply didn't have the speed today, even before considering the penalties," he remarked.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"I talked to him following the race. I believed there was enough space but felt the collision, so I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room and apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed satisfactorily afterward, and we exerted maximum effort given our resources. My goal was to extract the utmost potential from the car starting Friday afternoon through to today."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were near to securing some points."
Tsunoda felt 'frustrated'
The Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, team member Laurent Mekies explained. A crash involving Haas's driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
“I’m quite disappointed. My race was essentially over just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico,” Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give him ample room, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the car was slipping and I just couldn't control it."
"Up next are Baku and Singapore, where our car is expected to perform strongly. We’re optimistic about having successful weekends in those races."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important time on the track with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it could be argued that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, resulting in us having to withdraw the car," he stated.
"The most aggravating part about Yuki's retirement is the 40 laps we missed out on, which would have helped us better comprehend the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to an error in the implementation of the initial penalty."
"We must re-evaluate our procedures in this case and take lessons from the error made today. Such incidents occur, but overall our pit crew has performed outstandingly this season."
