Daniel Ricciardo comments on incident with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to clash with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo found himself in a tussle with Nico Hulkenberg during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza, as both drivers collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned he believed there was enough room, but then he experienced a collision. As a result, Hulkenberg's Haas was pushed onto the dirt, allowing his teammate Kevin Magnussen to overtake him.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he ended up with a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the first penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at his home circuit for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
“In the end, we just didn’t have the speed today, even setting aside the penalties,” he stated.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having a lot of fun racing side-by-side at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but I felt the collision, realizing I hadn't left sufficient room. I then offered my apology."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even tiny differences can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost potential from the car starting from Friday afternoon up until today."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda 'frustrated' after incident
The Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, according to team member Laurent Mekies. A crash between Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the early conclusion of the Japanese driver's race.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate because my race ended just a few laps in after a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained on the floor."
“I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the car kept skidding, making it impossible for me to control it.
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to perform well. Hopefully, we'll have successful weekends ahead."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because he lost important track time with the updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"In today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to control the events. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Following that, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki retiring is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have boosted our knowledge of the new updates we brought in."
“Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to improper execution of the initial penalty.
"We must evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Incidents like this occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance this season has been outstanding."
