Clash in Austria: Lando Norris Slams Max Verstappen’s ‘Reckless’ Move, Questions Future Friendship
Lando Norris: "I was knocked out" | Friendship with Max Verstappen? "It varies…"
Lando Norris reflects on his incident with Max Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix.
Lando Norris characterized his incident with Max Verstappen at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix as both "reckless" and "somewhat desperate."
Following a series of fiercely contested laps, Verstappen and Norris made contact as they neared Turn 3.
While braking, Verstappen veered slightly to the left, resulting in a collision.
Consequently, both drivers experienced flat tires and had to enter the pit lane.
Although Verstappen managed to carry on with a 10-second penalty, Norris had to withdraw from the race.
This marks the initial conflict between Verstappen and Norris, who have frequently occupied the top two positions over the past year.
Looking back on the confrontation, Norris mentioned to a group of journalists, including Crash.net in Austria: "I understand what to anticipate. I foresee assertiveness and testing boundaries, but on all three occasions, his actions were such that they could have easily led to an accident, and in that sense, they were somewhat irresponsible."
“It appeared somewhat desperate on his part, which wasn’t necessary since he has many victories already. Still, he seemed quite determined to prevent me from overtaking him. I expected him to be aggressive, so I wasn’t entirely surprised.”
"I anticipated a challenging, fair, and respectful race, but I don't believe that's what I experienced."
Norris declined to accept any responsibility for the event.
He stated, "I believe there's nothing I need to alter in my approach. I was right at the edge of the track and I'm unsure what more I could have done. He's often like that, but I have a lot of respect for Max."
"There are moments when I feel he oversteps, just a bit. However, these incidents do occur. I’m upset that it spoiled the race and wrecked the car, especially considering the upgrades and budget constraints. The car is damaged, and we need those parts for the upcoming week."
"It's not merely a consequence of on-track events; it's something we now have to deal with going into Silverstone, putting us at a disadvantage. Honestly, I expected better from him."
Norris failing to finish the race has allowed Verstappen to widen his lead in the Formula 1 drivers' championship by 81 points.
The British racer believes he was "eliminated from the competition" despite executing a "mistake-free" performance during the grand prix.
Speaking to Sky, he expressed his feelings by saying, "I’m at a loss for words. Just disappointed, nothing else. The race was good, and I was eager for a fair and intense competition. Unfortunately, I can’t say that’s how it turned out. It’s hard to accept. From my perspective, I made no errors and believe I performed well."
“I was removed from the competition. That’s all there is to it."
A further aspect of the accident involves the close relationship between Verstappen and Norris.
The two see each other as good friends in the paddock, but incidents like today's will only increase the tension between them.
Norris admitted that their friendship with Verstappen hinges on how Verstappen responds to the situation.
"I'm not sure. It hinges on what he admits. If he claims he did nothing wrong, I'll lose a great deal of respect for him," he stated.
"If he acknowledges that he was somewhat foolish and collided with me, acting a bit carelessly, then I would have a tiny bit of respect for him. However, it's still hard to accept, especially when competing for the victory."
"I made an effort to be fair, but he did not reciprocate."
