Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win Not Indicative of Season-End Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are insufficient for securing victories consistently throughout the remainder of the season. "Is it adequate to claim wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we've made a significant move forward."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri’s second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, which underscored McLaren’s dominance at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focused on addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
“We need to exercise caution,” he remarked. “Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza also has a very distinct and unique track layout.
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think it's sufficient for us to be the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm genuinely pleased to have won one here in Italy."
Despite facing challenges since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, referencing previous discussions of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the conditions in Baku will likely be quite different, and Singapore will present another unique challenge. Therefore, we need to approach each race with a fresh mindset. We successfully adjusted our approach from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced by our performance, there was a significant shift from one weekend to the next."
"We then experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out what was happening with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of challenging races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we certainly moved in the right direction."
