Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Victory Not Enough to Dominate 2024 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent upgrade is ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races for the remainder of the season’
"Do I believe it's enough to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not at this point, but we've definitely made progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Before Piastri took his second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, which underscored that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their problems with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, we've experienced the four toughest events of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a very unique and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other circuits."
"We have plenty of tasks ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have won one here in Italy regardless."
Despite facing challenges since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations by pointing out that there was similar championship hype after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. We need to approach each race with a fresh perspective. We made significant adjustments between Monaco and Montreal, and as demonstrated, the transition from Monaco to Montreal involved substantial changes from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such challenging races again, and I believe we won't."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but it's definitely a positive move forward."
