Balancing Act and Unanswered Questions: Insights from the Aragon MotoGP Thriller

The Risk-Reward Equation of Pecco Bagnaia | Key Discussions from the Aragon MotoGP

Exploring five significant discussion points from the Aragon MotoGP event at MotorLand.

The Aragon MotoGP last weekend may not have had much action at the lead, but it offered plenty to observe, from the resurgence of one champion's supremacy to the recurring shortcoming of another.

What lessons did Marquez's win truly impart?

Marc Marquez's triumph at the Aragon Grand Prix, coupled with his success in Saturday's Sprint, ultimately raised more queries than it resolved.

Marquez came to Aragon following what many consider his standout performance of the season in Austria. There, he secured a fourth-place finish in the Grand Prix and despite a crash in the Sprint, he demonstrated competitive speed at a track not typically viewed as favorable to him, unlike, for example, the Sachsenring. Had he avoided errors, Marquez's pace suggested he could have challenged Jorge Martin, who finished second, for position.

Thus, Aragon's outcome was predictable. Marquez had evidently gained an edge on the Desmosedici, improving from his past performances, and arriving at MotorLand — a track recognized for favoring Marquez to some extent — it was logical that he would emerge victorious.

His performance indeed indicates that he'll be contending for the leading spots throughout the season, particularly given his considerable lead over his competitors.

However, the reality is more complex, as the events in Austria and Aragon didn't unfold without complications.

In Austria, the competitors faced challenges with a more durable rear tire designed to disperse heat, necessary due to the track's numerous intense acceleration areas. This tire is distinct from the types used at nearly all other tracks.

In Aragon, the combination of a new and unclean racing surface worked to Marquez's benefit, as his skill in dirt tracking gave him a significant edge on surfaces with poor grip. The track conditions remained advantageous for Marquez throughout the weekend, as overnight rain on Friday and Saturday meant the track never improved from its state on Friday afternoon.

This isn't to say that Marquez didn't earn his win in Aragon, as his success was a direct result of his own skills, unique way of riding, and how he handled the specific conditions of the race.

However, he acknowledged during the post-race press conference that the circumstances in Aragon were indeed "unique," similar to how the tyre was distinct in Austria.

Regarding this matter, since the Silverstone race, MotoGP has not experienced a typical weekend concerning weather conditions, during which Marquez faced discomfort throughout the event.

The conditions of the track in Austria and the surface in Aragon indicate that it is only at the Misano circuit where we can accurately gauge Marquez's performance in comparison to competitors such as Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin under standard racing conditions.

Bagnaia's gamble on risk versus benefit

Every racer constantly weighs the pros and cons of taking risks, and it appears Francesco Bagnaia miscalculated this balance at Aragon.

His collision with Alex Marquez during the 18th lap of the Grand Prix was both needless and could have been prevented. Had he exercised more patience, he would have easily overtaken Marquez in the remaining four-plus laps.

However, this may not always be the case.

Throughout the race, the only position change among the leading six that wasn't the result of an error involved Jorge Martin surpassing Pedro Acosta on the back straight. This move was a redemption for Martin who had earlier made a miscalculated attempt to overtake Acosta at turn eight.

In addition, the rankings within the top six shifted due to several incidents: Acosta nearly lost control on the last turn, which let Alex Marquez pass him; Miguel Oliveira's crash at turn 16 elevated Bagnaia to sixth place; Franco Morbidelli's mistake at turn five opened the door for Bagnaia and Brad Binder to move up to fifth and sixth places, respectively; and an error by Acosta at turn 16 helped Bagnaia advance into fourth place.

For instance, throughout the race following the initial lap, Brad Binder was unable to overtake anyone. He spent nearly the entire 23 laps closely trailing behind Bagnaia and then Acosta, yet he never managed to advance past them.

Hence, it can be stated that surpassing competitors at Aragon was notably challenging on Sunday, largely due to the exceedingly slim racing track and the accumulation of debris found beyond it.

Analyzing the incident involving Bagnaia and Marquez in detail to conclusively determine who was at fault is fundamentally futile, as errors were made by both competitors.

Marquez needed to look to his left as he merged back into the racing line, similar to what he did earlier when he erred at the first turn on the third lap with Franco Morbidelli trailing him; meanwhile, Bagnaia ought to have provided more room or completely abandoned the maneuver if he felt he couldn't afford the space due to the tight race path and the condition of the track beyond it.

Both parties were at fault, yet given that Alex Marquez wasn't vying for the title and had his career prospects already settled, it's clear who suffered the most from the collision.

This, in essence, appears to be the critical aspect: Bagnaia often finds himself at a disadvantage in such situations, unlike some of his competitors. A case in point is Jorge Martin, who has consistently secured the second spot in the recent six races, propelling him to the forefront of the championship standings with a 23-point lead.

Consider the events at Aragon, the situation in Portimao involving Marc Marquez, the 2023 occurrence at Le Mans with Maverick Vinales, and his 2022 mishap at Motegi during an attempt to overtake Fabio Quartararo.

All of them share a commonality in that, to a certain degree, they can be attributed to Bagnaia's hesitance to yield space or to miss a chance.

In this context, the mentioned events bear resemblance to instances such as Bagnaia's overtaking maneuver from the outside against Jorge Martin in Jerez the previous year, his similar move on Martin in Malaysia during the same period, his impressive overtake of both Martin and Marco Bezzecchi on the outside at Jerez this season, his battle with Marc Marquez between turns nine and ten in the same event, his rapid ascent to the lead in the first lap at Qatar this year, and a comparable aggressive move at Mugello this season.

In summary, Bagnaia's mindset may have its drawbacks, but it also brings its benefits.

Bagnaia recognizes that relinquishing spots at this moment typically makes it more challenging to reclaim them later on, with a few exceptions such as last year at Phillip Island or this year in Catalunya, primarily due to issues related to front tire pressure.

In Aragon, understanding the difficulty and danger involved in overtaking, he saw an opportunity when Marquez erred at turn 12 and attempted to seize it. Although it didn't work out, it's this mindset that leads to Bagnaia's greatest achievements, such as those in Jerez, Mugello, and Malaysia.

Progressing in reverse

Pedro Acosta's debut season in MotoGP kicked off impressively, yet his podium finish at Aragon marked his first since the Americas GP in April.

Why did this happen? KTM's objective was to enhance the speed of its RC16, aiming for better lap times. However, this pursuit led to a compromise in Acosta's sense of control and comfort on the bike, culminating in a 13th-place finish in the Austrian race.

Acosta's comeback on the podium at Aragon was significantly due to switching back to a bike specification he had used earlier in the year, which he found more to his liking. This change led to improved lap times and greater consistency, culminating in a superior race performance and finishing position.

Additionally, it's important to note that during the weekend's quickest session, Practice, not a single KTM made it into the top 10, resulting in all of them failing to qualify for Q2.

Following a night of rainfall on Friday, the track conditions worsened by Saturday's qualifying rounds, with both Acosta and Brad Binder successfully advancing to Q2. In this session, Acosta secured a position on the front row.

Persistent rainfall from Saturday evening into Sunday left the circuit in a less-than-ideal condition for the Grand Prix, with the KTMs maintaining their speed, evidenced by Acosta securing a third-place finish, closely followed by Binder in fourth.

Thus, considering the aggressive manner in which Acosta, Binder, and especially Jack Miller pilot the RC16, it's understandable that the KTMs excelled on dirt-covered tracks. However, their performance dipped on cleaner circuits. Does this imply that their decision to roll back their specifications was truly a progress, or not?

Similar to Marquez's situation, the true outcome won't be known until the bikes hit the Misano circuit again for the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix this weekend.
