Adrian Newey’s Nostalgic Drive in Lauda’s Ferrari at Goodwood Amidst Uncertain F1 Future
Adrian Newey took the wheel of a legendary Ferrari Formula 1 vehicle at Goodwood during the weekend, amidst ongoing speculation about his future in F1.
Over the weekend at Goodwood, Adrian Newey took to the track, piloting the legendary Ferrari 312T F1 car once driven by Niki Lauda.
Newey took the helm of Lauda's title-securing Ferrari, with the Red Bull design expert characterizing the moment as "truly extraordinary."
Throughout the weekend, all eyes were on Newey as the unveiling of his Red Bull hypercar took place for the very first time.
The individual, who is 65 years old, also took the wheel of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, a vehicle that was a joint creation between him, Red Bull, and the iconic British manufacturer
However, contemplating his time with Lauda's iconic Ferrari, Newey believed it served as an "appropriate homage."
"This is actually my third time! Being behind the wheel of Niki's former car, the one he won the championship in, is truly remarkable," he mentioned.
"I was quite familiar with Niki, so being here, occupying the same spot and attempting to comprehend his experiences and his preparation for the races and all that – truly extraordinary."
"It's truly remarkable. An appropriate homage to his memory."
Formula 1 has significantly evolved from the 1970s, the period when Lauda's Ferrari was prominent.
Newey admitted that working as a designer during that period would have been "intriguing" given the limited set of regulations.
He continued, expressing his admiration for the variety in vehicles. "I have a deep affection for these vehicles. My childhood was marked by my fascination with the Lotus 49 from the years '67 and '68. It was the very first car that caught my attention. By the time 1974 rolled around, when I was 15, I even created a painting of this particular car for a school art assignment."
"Consider the technological advances of that period. It must have been an intriguing time to be part of, given that the guidelines were quite brief, spanning only a couple of pages, yet the financial resources were fairly limited."
"Significantly, the lack of search tools meant relying heavily on intuition, as wind tunnels were only beginning to emerge. It must have been quite intriguing."
Newey's future in Formula 1 remains uncertain following his exit from Red Bull in the early months of 2025.
There's been strong speculation about his potential transfers to Aston Martin and McLaren, while the once-rumored connection with Ferrari appears to have diminished lately.
