2025 Toyota Crown Signia: A Hybrid Wagon Disguised as a Crossover SUV

Published

Evaluation: The 2025 Toyota Crown Signia introduces a hybrid wagon to the American market

Purchasers of the Crown Signia will appreciate the ample cargo space and the comfortable seating, though taller passengers may find the headroom to be somewhat limited.

Toyota's newest hybrid surpasses the Highlander in fuel efficiency, although it doesn't match the performance of its sedan counterpart.

Toyota's showroom is becoming increasingly packed and somewhat bewildering due to the numerous hybrid crossover SUVs on display. The newest addition appears to be more of a marketing strategy.

This summer, the 2025 Toyota Crown Signia is set to arrive at dealerships, offering a more spacious and practical version of the Crown sedan, which succeeded the Avalon as the top model in Toyota's passenger car lineup. However, with a starting price of $44,985 (including a $1,395 destination fee), and potentially exceeding $51,000, some buyers may find certain aspects lacking in refinement.

Additionally, Toyota is exaggerating the Crown Signia's credentials as a crossover. This vehicle is not a crossover SUV. Here's the situation.

Toyota Crown Signia Introduces a Wagon Disguised as an SUV

Toyota is branding its new hybrid vehicle as a crossover SUV. However, it is essentially a wagon, and one clear indicator is that the rear windows lack factory tinting. According to the EPA's classification, vehicles like pickups, SUVs, and crossovers, which are oddly categorized as trucks, are allowed to have tinted windows straight from the manufacturer—a feature highly favored in the U.S. In contrast, passenger cars such as wagons and sedans are prohibited from having factory-tinted windows due to peculiar regulations.

The Crown Signia boasts a more appealing design compared to its sedan version, largely due to better proportions. While the Crown sedan has a somewhat top-heavy appearance, the Crown Signia extends this bulk into a sleeker, wagon-style shape. Measuring 194.1 inches in length, the Crown Signia is almost as long as the Highlander, a three-row crossover SUV. The car features narrow LED daytime running lights positioned near the hood, with the headlights placed lower on the bumper. At the back, the vehicle is equipped with full-width LED taillights.

Anyone familiar with a Crown sedan will find the interior of the Crown Signia quite recognizable. This is because the design from the B-pillars forward remains largely unchanged. The dashboard boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The console is adorned with glossy piano-black plastic, which is prone to scratches. However, the Crown Signia stands out by offering physical buttons, knobs, and switches for key climate and audio functions.

The vehicle's interior comfortably accommodates five passengers, and individuals who are 6 feet tall can sit behind others of the same height without any problems. However, taller passengers might find headroom to be a concern. The front seats are elevated using plastic spacers, which reduce headroom but give the impression of a higher sitting position similar to that of an SUV. Despite this, the Signia only offers 6.7 inches of ground clearance, akin to a sedan. The elevated seats do facilitate easier entry and exit compared to the Avalon model. Additionally, the 60:40 split-folding rear seat allows the Crown Signia to transport items up to 6.5 feet in length, such as a surfboard. With the rear seats upright, the Signia provides up to 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 68.8 cubic feet when the second-row seats are folded down. This is a significant increase from the 15.2 cubic feet of trunk space available in the Crown sedan.

Toyota introduces the Crown Signia, a hybrid wagon for the American market. Each Crown Signia is equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine combined with two electric motor generators, producing a total of 240 horsepower. Toyota has not commented on whether the more powerful HybridMax powertrain, featuring a turbo-4 and available in the Crown sedan, or a plug-in hybrid option available in Japan, will be offered in the future. The vehicle comes with standard all-wheel drive, which primarily directs power to the front wheels under normal conditions. According to Toyota, the power distribution can be adjusted on demand up to a 20:80 split, although this was not observed during testing in sunny California.

The acceleration of the vehicle isn't particularly fast. Toyota claims that it can go from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds, which is sufficient for merging onto highways without trouble. Pressing the accelerator all the way down causes the engine to become noticeably loud, lacking the quiet refinement found in Lexus models. The car's powertrain is better suited for smooth, unobtrusive driving.

The 2025 Toyota Crown Signia

The Signia offers a smooth ride, focusing more on comfort. While it manages body movements effectively, it did show some wheel hop when navigating the canyons in San Diego. However, it's likely that most Crown Signias won't be frequently maneuvering through canyon roads.

The EPA fuel economy ratings for this wagon stand at 39 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 38 mpg combined. These figures are the highest achievable in the U.S. for a gas-powered wagon, but they fall short of the Crown sedan's ratings of 42 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 41 mpg combined. This difference is attributed to the wagon's additional weight and the aerodynamic impact of its extended roof.

All Crown Signia models come with Toyota's comprehensive safety features. These include automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and monitors for blind spots. For an additional $1,865, buyers of the higher-end Limited trim can opt for the Advanced Technology Package, which offers extras like a 360-degree camera system, parking sensors, and alerts for cross-traffic in the front.

Toyota Expands Hybrid Crossover Offerings

The 2025 Crown Signia series offers straightforward choices. The entry-level XLE version is priced at $44,985, whereas the Limited variant is available for $51,250. Both models come with a good range of features, although it’s almost shameful that the Limited model, costing over $50,000, does not include adjustable lumbar support for the front passenger seat.

Toyota set the cost of the Crown Signia to match that of similar-sized Highlander Hybrid models, which also have an extra third-row seat.

For those who appreciate wagons or want a unique option, the Crown Signia is worth considering. However, we believe that most families, needing more seats, will likely turn their attention to the Highlander in the showroom.

Toyota covered the travel expenses, and I ended up with a sunburn while conducting this test drive review for you.
