2025 Polestar 4: Redefining the Electric Vehicle Genre with Speed, Style, and Innovation

Review: The 2025 Polestar 4 Redefines Its Class

Featuring a 102-kWh battery and capable of up to 200-kW rapid charging

Distance capability? It’s approximately 270 miles with the dual-motor configuration and around 300 miles with the single-motor setup (both are estimates).

No 800-volt charging capability, but the Polestar 4 comes equipped with Android software

Concerning the absence of the rear glass…

Polestar has made its initial mark by launching a plug-in hybrid 1 coupe and has since progressed to a more traditional 2 hatchback, as it continues to expand its range of fully electric vehicles.

This year, the Polestar 3 aims for a blend of efficiency and performance, featuring a five-seat design and being assembled in the United States. It appears to be a more reliable option compared to the Polestar 4, which is an interesting new model that combines elements of a coupe, sedan, fastback, and SUV. This new entry is targeting drivers who might otherwise consider the Genesis GV60, Tesla Model Y, or the forthcoming Porsche Macan EV.

If you're trying to categorize it by its body style, don't bother. Its ground clearance is lower than typical SUVs. Having four doors means it can't be called a coupe. The fixed glass above the rear seats means it isn't a hatchback. A sedan? Not with that roof design.

The Polestar 4 defies traditional car categories. It shows interest in various body designs without committing to just one. This unique approach allows it to be a captivating vehicle, despite some notable but non-deal-breaking issues: an intense emphasis on touchscreen controls, relatively quick charging capabilities, and a sometimes stiff driving experience.

How am I certain? I took the car on a drive from central Madrid to the hills located northwest near Segovia, and then returned. The Polestar 4 certainly exhibits many of the typical characteristics of an electric vehicle. However, in certain respects, it stands out uniquely on its own.

Additional details: 2025 Polestar 4

Hidden within the sleek exterior of the Polestar 4 are two distinct models. One is a brisk single-motor variant with rear-wheel drive, while the other is a swift dual-motor version offering all-wheel drive. Although both models lack significant steering feedback and their large wheels challenge the adaptive suspension, they each maintain a futuristic feel.

A 102-kilowatt-hour battery powers both variants. The single-motor Polestar 4 isn't particularly powerful, offering 272 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. According to Polestar, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and has an estimated driving range of 300 miles, based on EPA standards rather than WLTP. If other electric vehicles didn't boast excessively rapid acceleration, these specifications would be quite satisfactory.

It wasn't until you experienced the dual-motor 4 that things truly changed. Utilizing the same battery, this vehicle delivers a combined output of 544 horsepower and 506 pound-feet of torque. As a result, the car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, though this also reduces its range to 270 miles. This is the ideal vehicle for navigating the winding mountain roads leading northwest towards Segovia, where you share the road with Seats and cyclists who move forward in 20-kph intervals. Spot an opening in the lane, press the accelerator, and the dual-motor Polestar 4 swiftly moves into position—doing so without the high-pitched whine typical of some other luxury electric vehicles.

Single-motor vehicles come equipped with basic dampers and struts, while the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Polestar 4 features adaptive dampers designed to handle the power generated by its drivetrain. This model requires greater flexibility, even when outfitted with the mid-range 21-inch Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, as seen on my test vehicle. The Polestar 4 typically comes with 20-inch wheels, but U.S.-bound AWD versions offer 22-inch options. In performance mode, with the steering set to its usual light weight, the car maintained precise highway tracking but struggled over rough patches of pavement, skittering rather than absorbing the imperfections.

The answer? Apply the brakes in those areas, or use the one-pedal driving mode to reduce the effects. The two braking systems complement each other effectively, although the one-pedal mode seems less responsive in slowing down compared to other high-performance electric vehicles I've tested lately.

In other credibility updates, the dual-motor Polestar 4 boasts a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds and reports a ground clearance of 6.5 inches. However, given its stylish design, it's hard to imagine anyone pushing these specs to their limits.

The 2025 Polestar 4

The 2025 Edition of the Polestar

2025 Polestar 4 design: Spacious both inside and out

Impressive aesthetics throughout

Spacious interior: measuring 190.5 inches in length, with a wheelbase of 118.1 inches, and offering 18.6 to 54.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity (plus a compact front trunk).

Excessive number of features hidden within the touchscreen

Indoor illumination inspired by the solar system

The design of the 4's exterior and interior encompasses a spacious cabin, and Polestar extends this theme to the ambient lighting. The lighting is inspired by celestial bodies in our solar system, creating an effect similar to a mobile planetarium, but without the musical influence of the Doobie Brothers.

The Polestar 4 features an exhilarating wedge design, highlighted by pickaxe-shaped LED headlights and topped with the Polestar emblem. The sides are characterized by robust, angular sills that create a hollowed-out effect, breaking up what would be broad sections of metal. At the back, a continuous LED taillight strip draws the rear inward, complementing the upward-sweeping roofline for a sleek, minimalist look.

In my opinion, the shortcomings of the 4 lie in its extended panoramic roof over the back seat and its short, concealed decklid. Polestar employs these features to eliminate a rearview windshield, but this design choice doesn't sufficiently make up for the visibility issues it creates. For people who wear prescription glasses or suffer from motion sickness, the digital rear camera mirror that Polestar offers is inadequate. Mazda pushed the design envelope further with the 3 hatchback, making it a more striking and standout vehicle.

The cockpit of the 4 has been simplified more than necessary. The 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster and 15.4-inch tablet-like touchscreen serve well as displays. However, when these are used via the Google built-in interface to manage many functions usually controlled by buttons, switches, or knobs, they result in the kind of dissatisfaction that other car manufacturers try to avoid as much as they avoid media inquiries. Numerous functions rely on the touchscreen and the steering-wheel controls—such as adjusting the head-up display height and information, steering-wheel position, and more—making it a time-consuming process to set up the car for a driver who isn’t using one of the car’s preset “favorite” configurations.

This development is disappointing, especially considering that the rest of the interior embodies the clean and sophisticated aesthetic typical of electric vehicles. The fabric seats provide great support and have manual adjustments. Polestar also provides an option for genuine leather seats. The Polestar 4 features ample legroom and headroom, thanks to its flat floor design and overall structure. Surprisingly, the absence of a rear window doesn't cause as much discomfort for back-seat passengers as anticipated. However, the rear seat could benefit from enhanced support, although its electric recline feature comfortably accommodates two large passengers, with a third person in the middle who can easily rest on their shoulders.

Starting at $56,300 for the Rear-Wheel Drive Model

$64,300 for the all-wheel drive 4

Now open for orders, the Polestar 4 will start shipping in a few months. The single-motor model is priced at $56,300, which includes a $1,400 destination fee. The dual-motor AWD version is available for $64,300.

Each Polestar 4 is equipped with features such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping, and a 360-degree camera system. An optional package offers semi-autonomous driving capabilities by integrating 12 lidar sensors, 14 cameras, and a radar sensor, with Polestar assuring enhancements via over-the-air updates without pledging full self-driving functionality. Additional standard amenities include a power-operated tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and 20-inch wheels.

Available choices include a $1,500 lidar-sensor Pilot Pack for single-motor vehicles (standard for dual-motor models) and a Pro Pack, which is priced at either $2,000 or $600 depending on the motor configuration. The Pro Pack enhances the car with 21-inch wheels, gold valve caps, and gold-striped seatbelts.

Opting for the Plus Pack bumps the price up to either $61,800 or $69,800, depending on the number of motors. This package includes 12-way power-adjustable front seats, faux leather seats, heated and reclining rear seats, a head-up display, and an audio system from Harman Kardon.

Cars equipped with dual motors and the Performance Pack are priced at $74,300. This package includes a sport-tuned suspension, 22-inch forged wheels with summer tires, and Brembo brakes featuring enhanced discs and gold-painted calipers.

Initial production of the 2025 Polestar 4 will take place in China, though this could be problematic due to ongoing tariff discussions. Starting early next year, manufacturing will shift to a facility in South Korea, which may or may not address these tariff concerns. For the time being, Polestar maintains that the current pricing will remain unchanged. Featuring a distinctive design and unique characteristics, the Polestar 4 has the potential to become a cult hit, particularly within the electric vehicle community where standing out often proves beneficial.
