2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Review: Electrifying the Pony Car Legacy with Power and Range
Article Summary: The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Electrifies with Its Performance
Ford's Mach-E stands alone as the company's sole electric model, distinct from their lineup of gas-powered cars. Nonetheless, its design and presence ensure that it's unmistakably recognized as part of the iconic Mustang series.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT showcases bold design elements and the iconic Mustang emblems, exuding an exaggerated essence of the classic muscle car. As I opt for the vehicle's performance setting, aptly named Unbridle, the ambiance intensifies, and a simulated engine noise interrupts our chat abruptly, much like a sudden halt in music on a turntable.
I turn to my driving companion and inquire, "Are you fond of equines?"
The Mach-E has its own unique electric vehicle identity
Though the Mach-E benefits from the familiar Mustang moniker, its top features are distinctly separate from the traditional Mustang range.
Apart from the Chevy Blazer EV and Equinox EV, all other competitors significantly deviate from their internal combustion engine counterparts.

The Mach-E stands out as a pioneer among the early electric vehicles in the competitive compact crossover SUV category, boasting a sleek and modern design that combines smooth contours with advanced technology and user interfaces. It hit the streets in late 2020, at a time when the Tesla Model Y was its only real competitor, with other models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Nissan Ariya still on their way to the market.
The Mach-E GT may not be designed with the track in mind like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, but a number of technical tweaks and clever enhancements have improved its performance on twisty rural roads, as Green Car Reports has recently discovered. In contrast, the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally is crafted for off-road excitement and is the true racecourse star. Stay tuned for an upcoming review of that model over at our partner site, Motor Authority.
The 2024 Mach-E GT excels in the performance crossover category, particularly in terms of distance covered on a single charge. It outperforms the Tesla Model Y Performance according to EPA standards, surpassing it by a slight margin. Furthermore, it has a noticeable lead over the Kia EV6 GT and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which are rated at 206 miles and 221 miles respectively.
The goal isn't solely to enhance performance; the battery found in the Mach-E GT actually surpasses the size of its competitors' batteries. Equipped with a 91-kwh (usable) Extended Range battery, it boasts an EPA range of 280 miles. Additionally, the Mach-E Select and Premium versions offer a 72-kwh Standard Range battery, which delivers 230 miles on all-wheel drive and 250 miles when equipped with rear-wheel drive.

Beyond the GT model, the Mach-E continues to impress with its long-distance capabilities, thanks to its Extended Range battery option. This allows for a maximum of 320 miles on a single charge with the rear-wheel-drive version, and a 300-mile range for the all-wheel-drive variant, surpassing the range of both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 when equipped with the larger battery. Additionally, all models of the Mach-E now have the ability to power up at Tesla Supercharger stations, courtesy of a free NACS adapter provided by Ford. This is further complemented by incorporating these charging points into Ford's own FordPass app, which assists with locating charging stations and planning travel routes.
The Mach-E models equipped with the Standard Range battery utilize a distinct chemical composition and layout for their battery pack compared to those with the Extended Range option. The Standard Range variant contains 108 LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) cells, which is significantly fewer than the 376 cells found in the Extended Range models.
I noted from the car's onboard computer that it achieved an energy consumption rate of 2.8 miles per kilowatt-hour over a few hours. This was across various driving conditions including highway, quick-paced rural routes, and city streets, all while maintaining a comfortable temperature setting in the vehicle (with outside temperatures in the 60-degree range) and not focusing on driving efficiently. This suggests that the vehicle could travel approximately 250 miles under everyday conditions.
The 2024 Mach-E GT delivers an impressive and seamless driving experience, particularly on twisting rural routes. With a robust 480 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, it's capable of reaching 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. If you choose to invest an additional $745 for the Performance Upgrade, as was the case with the model I tested (or $995 if you don't opt for the wheel and tire upgrade), you'll see the torque jump to 700 pound-feet and the acceleration time to 60 mph drop to a mere 3.3 seconds. With such a reasonable upgrade cost, it seems like a no-brainer.

Once you opt for the enhanced version, the 2024 Mach-E benefits from an upgrade to a newer, stronger back motor—identical to the one found in the F-150 Lightning, which is a Ford-manufactured component that the company intends to further amplify in its forthcoming electric vehicles.
Currently, Ford is manufacturing only the rear motor in-house, while it will still source the inverter for this motor, along with the front motors, from external providers for the Mach-E.
The Mach-E has yet to incorporate a heat pump; however, Ford has simplified its cooling system from three circuits to two main ones with an additional one for temperature regulation. Ling Gong, a specialist in product development and electric vehicle energy management, notes that Ford has also adjusted the gear ratio to 9.7:1 from the former 9.0:1 to align more effectively with the new motor's features. Moreover, the company has replaced the existing wheels with aerodynamic ones, which enhance the vehicle's drag coefficient by roughly 0.007.
Updates to the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E
The noise generated by the propulsion system seems to overshadow the extensive efforts made by the development and engineering departments in enhancing the Mach-E's noise insulation and blocking out external sounds such as the whir of the gears. However, when you deactivate this added sound feature, which is advisable, the Mustang Mach-E GT exudes a level of sophistication that could see it mistaken for a European luxury vehicle.
The feeling of sophistication is achieved in part through the inclusion of a magnetic damping system in all GT models, which facilitates distinct adjustments among the Whisper, Engage, and Unbridle settings.

The Mach-E is equipped with a separate suspension system for all four wheels, featuring strut-based suspension at the front and a multilink setup at the rear, each enhanced by a hollow stabilizer bar.
Every Mach-E model comes equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels. The GT model is outfitted with bigger brake discs, and the intensity of the regenerative braking system changes depending on the drive mode selected. The vehicle lacks shift paddles on the steering wheel, but it does feature a one-pedal driving option that increases regenerative braking to the point where using the brake pedal becomes almost unnecessary, except for coming to a complete stop. Additionally, the Mach-E's auto-hold function doesn't provide much finesse during parking maneuvers, so it's advisable to deactivate it when trying to gently move into a parking spot.

The Mach-E effectively conceals its heaviness in most scenarios, yet uneven rural roads with uneven terrain highlighted the vehicle's almost 5,000-pound weight (specifically 4,952) when in the GT model. Additionally, the utilization of magnetic damping seems to significantly enhance the overall smoothness inside the vehicle.
The design and storage capacity of the Mach-E remain the same, maintaining ample room in the rear seats and a spacious front trunk with a drainage feature (perfect for pre-game festivities!). The GT versions now come with Ford Performance seats in the front, which provide excellent support for the back and thighs while not being overly restrictive around the edges. Similar to my experience with other Mach-E models, being a taller individual, I found myself desiring the option to adjust the seating position lower by an inch or two for added comfort and a more intuitive feel during maneuvering.

The Mustang Mach-E GT, priced from $55,890 with destination fees included, comes with an impressive array of included features. It retains the Premium model's high-quality 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, complete with a subwoofer, as well as mood-enhancing interior lighting, front seats that are both heated and adjustable, a steering wheel that keeps your hands warm, customizable driver settings, and a motorized rear hatch. Additionally, it boasts an aluminum dashboard decoration and decorative stitching for a touch of elegance.
The current version of Ford's advanced driving assistance technology, BlueCruise, is priced at $2,100 for a three-year period. It offers enhanced lane positioning and more refined automatic lane switching capabilities, even across several lanes when necessary. Additional features on the vehicle I tested were the expansive glass roof that doesn't open and the bronze-colored rims, bringing the total cost to approximately $61,000.

Every model of the Mustang Mach-E will feature the latest iteration of Ford's Sync 4 multimedia interface, boasting a 15.5-inch capacitive touchscreen designed with a nearly flat menu interface – an excellent feature. Additionally, it includes an adaptable 10.2-inch display for the driver's instruments, the convenience of wireless phone charging, and USB connections available in both the front and back of the vehicle.
Indeed, the Mach-E maintains a strong connection to its muscle car heritage; regardless of individual opinions, it embodies a charismatic character and stands as a quality electric vehicle, thanks to the considerable power it packs under the hood and throughout its design.
