2024 Chevy Equinox EV: Affordable, High-Range Crossover Set to Challenge Tesla Model Y

Published

on

Analysis: 2024 Chevy Equinox EV offers 300 miles of range for less than $40,000

The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV stands out as a significant electric vehicle debut this year. Categorized as a compact crossover SUV, it boasts an EPA-estimated range between 285 and 319 miles. The vehicle is attractively priced, starting at $43,295, which includes a compulsory $1,395 delivery charge.

A base model with a starting price of $34,995 is still expected to be available "later this year."

The Chevy Equinox EV, a front-wheel-drive vehicle, offers a range of 319 miles and is priced at $43,295. This closely matches the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD, which has a range of 320 miles and costs $46,630, making the Equinox a more affordable option. Currently, both models are eligible for the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, which is now applied as an immediate rebate for qualifying buyers. It’s important to note that Tesla frequently updates its specifications and pricing.

Chevrolet Equinox EV: Familiarity for the General Public

Importantly, the electric version of the Equinox avoids many of the quirks that can make electric vehicles feel unfamiliar to newcomers. Its controls are mostly traditional, featuring a lever for the windshield wipers and knobs or buttons for managing climate settings and audio levels. While it offers regenerative braking and one-pedal driving options, these can be completely turned off, allowing the Equinox EV to drive just like a regular car with a standard automatic transmission. However, it lacks a front trunk, which is a missed opportunity. The portable charging cord is stored deep in the rear cargo area, necessitating the removal of all luggage to access it.

Chevy’s tiniest electric vehicle stands apart from the Tesla Model Y, which was not only the leading electric vehicle in global sales last year but also the top-selling individual car overall. Other contenders in the compact SUV electric vehicle segment are the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4.

Chevy has been planning the Equinox EV for quite some time, aiming for it to be their top-selling electric vehicle. General Motors stated that the Bolt EV production was halted last year to make way for the Equinox EV, which is expected to hit the market in 2023.

The subsequent and embarrassing 12-to-18-month postponement in the production of Ultium vehicles was not because of issues at GM’s cell manufacturing facilities. Instead, it was due to a supplier’s failure to deliver dependable, high-speed automated equipment for assembling the large and intricate Ultium battery modules. Now that the Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and front-wheel-drive Equinox EV models are reaching GM dealerships, it appears those challenges are firmly in the past—at least, GM is optimistic that they are.

In mid-May, we dedicated a day and covered over 100 miles with two Equinox EVs, leaving us thoroughly impressed. We predominantly drove a front-wheel drive LT model, but also took an all-wheel-drive version for a short spin. By the time this review is published, most Chevrolet dealerships are expected to have Equinox EVs available.

Chevy debuts the Equinox EV, pushing the boundaries of the compact category

Chevrolet's new Equinox EV is labeled a “compact crossover” SUV, a segment that dominates the U.S. automotive market by making up 25% of all vehicle sales—surpassing midsize SUVs and full-size pickups. However, the Equinox EV stands out as a larger option within its category. Compared to its gasoline counterpart, which shares no structural elements with the electric version, the Equinox EV stretches about eight inches longer, measuring 191 inches in total length. It's also 12 inches wider at 85 inches (including mirrors), while maintaining the same height of 65 inches. The electric model's wheelbase extends to 116 inches, approximately nine inches more than the gas-powered Equinox. This makes the Equinox EV notably larger than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4, which are shorter by around eight and 11 inches, respectively. Despite its "compact" classification, the Equinox EV provides ample interior space for both front and rear passengers and features a flat floor for those seated in the back.

We prefer the design of the Equinox EV over the larger Blazer EV. The front still features the signature Chevy brow and bowtie, but the sides are smoothly contoured without odd creases or accent lines. The rear end boasts a stylish, full-width light that splits the ducktail liftgate, creating an overall cohesive look. We don't have the drag coefficient, but this crossover SUV has a conventional appearance—and we found it attractive. The Galaxy Grey metallic paint on our test vehicle caught our eye; its subtle pink or lilac undertones made for a unique and appealing color. (Of course, you can opt for the standard, less exciting silver if that's more your style.)

Within the cabin, Chevrolet's typical digital instrument panel located in front of the driver and the central touchscreen that serves both the driver and front passenger emphasize the interior's spaciousness. According to Chevrolet's specifications, their central screen measures 17.7 inches, which is larger compared to the Tesla Model Y's 15.4-inch screen. Notably, the Tesla Model Y lacks an instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, whereas Chevrolet provides an 11.1-inch display in that position.

The interior of our 2LT test vehicle featured a predominantly gray and black color palette, highlighted with blue and silver matte trim that added a touch of vibrancy. The horizontal dashboard was emphasized by the low, wide screens, and it included two large, circular vents on the outer edges and, curiously, two rectangular vents in the center.

Equinox EV's Performance: Smooth and Steady

The Equinox EV is equipped with an Ultium battery pack, which General Motors claims offers 85 kilowatt-hours of usable energy. These NMCA cells are produced in collaboration with LG at joint venture facilities. Currently, two of these plants are operational in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, while a third one is being built in Lansing, Michigan.

The Equinox EV's front wheels are driven by a permanent-magnet motor with a power output of 157 kilowatts (213 horsepower) and 236 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds, according to official figures. For those opting for all-wheel drive, an additional induction motor can be added to the rear axle, bringing the total power to 212 kilowatts (288 horsepower) and 333 pound-feet of torque. This configuration improves the 0-to-60-mph acceleration by two seconds but reduces the EPA-rated range by 34 miles, dropping it from 319 to 285 miles. While this still surpasses many competitors, it falls short of the notable 300-mile threshold.

Chevrolet Equinox EV 2024

The front-wheel-drive (FWD) Equinox EV boasts a maximum range of 319 miles, which is comparable to the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Model Y Long Range's 320 miles. In comparison, the Ioniq 5, Ariya, and ID.4 achieve ranges between 291 and 304 miles. During a test drive with a FWD 2LT version, our informal assessments indicated that Chevrolet’s range predictions were precise. Driving for 102 miles decreased the displayed range by 106 miles and reduced the battery level from 98 percent to 66 percent. Chevrolet claims that these range capabilities allow users to drive the vehicle similarly to how they would use a tank of gas, implying that daily charging is unnecessary under typical conditions.

The vehicle accelerates briskly, allowing it to match the pace of most traffic, although the gas pedal is not overly sensitive. You have to deliberately press down for more power, and it won't deliver an intense, jarring boost. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) version offers slightly better speed, but the difference isn't significant. Additionally, we observed some torque steer in the AWD model, which was not present in the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version.

The electric version of the Equinox weighs around 1,600 pounds more than its gasoline counterpart. Its extended wheelbase contributes to a smooth and stable driving experience. With a turning circle of 38 feet, it falls within the typical range for its class, although the ID.4 boasts a tighter 31.5-foot turning radius. The suspension prioritizes comfort, and the vehicle handled well in all the conditions we encountered, considering Detroit's relatively flat and straight roads. We are eager to conduct more rigorous testing on diverse terrains in the future.

Chevrolet's one-pedal driving system has consistently performed well, and their Ultium electric vehicles (EVs) continue this trend. On the touchscreen interface, there's an icon that enables "One Pedal Driving" in the "Normal" mode. Tapping this icon again will completely disable regenerative braking. However, to access the maximum regenerative braking setting, additional steps are required. The driver needs to select "Set Level" from the box and then choose "High" from the resulting dropdown menu. For improved safety and reduced driver distraction, these steps should be streamlined into a single popup window.

Roomy and sleek, the Chevy Equinox EV nails the finer points. Despite being labeled a "compact" crossover SUV, it offers ample interior space, both in the front and back. The rear-seat legroom rivals that of some midsize gas-powered SUVs, and the flat rear floor design enhances comfort for passengers in the center seat on long trips.

Positioned in the driver's seat, the sloping hood provides a clear view of the road. Adjusting the seat height to elevate the driver's shoulders above the window line also improves visibility. However, rear three-quarter visibility is limited, a common issue with many modern SUVs.

The spacious center console includes two cupholders, a pen slot, and ample room for passengers' belongings. Additionally, there's a sizable storage compartment on the floor below the upper section of the console, which blends in with the black interior materials and carpet. The console, located beneath the central armrest, has a hinge that opens towards the driver, making it less accessible for the front passenger.

A tiny button with a power symbol located on top of the central dashboard display has dual roles. Pressing it once silences the audio, while pressing it a second time switches off the screen.

The cargo space in the Equinox EV is 26.4 cubic feet when measured behind the rear seats. If you fold down the rear seatbacks, the capacity increases to 57.2 cubic feet. Unlike some rivals, the rear seats in the Equinox EV fold nearly flat, creating an extended, flat load floor suitable for transporting flat items.

Equinox EV Offers Two Trim Levels and Optional All-Wheel Drive

Currently, the Equinox EV lineup is straightforward. Buyers have the option between the basic LT model and the more stylized RS model. Both trims come with front-wheel drive as the standard configuration, with the choice to upgrade to all-wheel drive. Each trim is available in "2" and "3" levels, where higher numbers represent additional standard features and optional extras, accompanied by a higher price tag. According to Chevrolet, the entry-level 1LT is expected to be released later this year.

The 2LT model is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, a front LED light bar, roof rails, a power liftgate, heated front seats and steering wheel, an adjustable power driver's seat, and adaptive cruise control as standard features. Optional features include Super Cruise for hands-free driving, and the choice between a white-painted roof or a panoramic sunroof. The 2RS model enhances the offering with 21-inch wheels and lower-profile tires, a black-painted roof, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and additional aesthetic enhancements.

Upgrading to the 3LT model enhances the vehicle with cooling features for the previously heated front seats, and introduces power adjustments for the front passenger seat. It also includes heated seats for the outer rear positions, dual-zone climate control, heated wiper parking, and 21-inch alloy wheels. The 3RS version shares similar aesthetic enhancements with the 2RS model.

Although bigger wheels tend to have a more appealing appearance, we usually recommend that the ride quality could be superior and drivers might achieve better range with smaller wheels—based on experiences with other electric vehicles. (Chevrolet representatives were unable to confirm which wheels were used for the EPA range evaluations.)

In contrast to numerous electric vehicles in this category, our Equinox EV 2LT version came equipped with a rear-window wiper. This feature is typically standard on gas-powered crossovers but is frequently omitted in electric models to minimize aerodynamic drag. Conversely, it seems that wireless phone charging is not an option. The Equinox EV, when outfitted with an optional hitch receiver, can tow up to 1,500 pounds. However, Chevrolet has not provided details on the impact this might have on the vehicle's estimated range.

A significant feature available is the Super Cruise hands-free adaptive cruise control system, which ranks among the best we've tested. This option is available across all trim levels (2LT, 2RS, 3LT, 3RS) from the start. During our test drive with the Equinox EV, we utilized the system multiple times, and it delivered on its promises. It includes automatic lane changes when safe, allowing the vehicle to overtake slower traffic and then return to the right-hand lane afterward. The system is accompanied by a 36-month free trial period, after which a subscription costing $25 per month is required to maintain OnStar and Super Cruise connectivity.

Absence of Apple CarPlay and Google's Restrictions

This leads us to the significant issue at hand. The Equinox EV lacks support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allow smartphone mirroring. General Motors (GM) representatives highlighted that Tesla has also never included these features, though they didn't mention Tesla directly. This situation necessitates the use of the vehicle’s own system and data connection—an extra expense. Furthermore, GM representatives were unable to clarify who holds the rights to data generated from drivers’ app use, navigation, destinations, music preferences, and other related activities.

For this journalist who uses an Android device, the experience with navigation was not as challenging as anticipated. However, enthusiasts of Apple who depend on Apple Maps are largely facing difficulties.

Within the Equinox EV, the Google Assistant provides navigation through Google Maps, taking into account the battery's charge level. Similar to Tesla vehicles, it directs the electric Equinox EV to destinations through quick-charging stations and prepares the battery for charging when required. It informs drivers about the duration of their stop and the expected battery charge at the next stop, a feature Tesla has offered for over a decade.

During our evaluation of the Equinox EV, we did not have the opportunity to try out the routing feature. Owners of the vehicle will have complimentary access to this feature for up to 8 years, with a possibility of extension. Representatives from GM indicated that a decision has not yet been made regarding whether the access will be extended beyond this period or what the potential cost might be in the future.

Prioritizing Range Over Efficiency?

During our test drive through a combination of rural Michigan roads and Interstate highways reaching speeds of up to 80 mph, we recorded an efficiency of roughly 3 miles per kilowatt-hour over a distance of 100 miles. While this efficiency is lower compared to some other vehicles on the market, most consumers are more concerned with the vehicle's range than its efficiency—assuming they even understand what a kilowatt-hour means. The key figure that will attract their attention is the 300-mile range.

In line with all Chevrolet electric vehicles that are not full-size trucks, the charging port is located at the top of the left-front fender, right before the driver's door. The Equinox EV comes equipped with an onboard charger rated at 11.5 kW, allowing it to gain up to 36 miles of range for each hour of charging.

DC fast charging can reach up to 150 kW through a CCS port, although future models are expected to switch to the NACS port. Chevy estimates a gain of "around 77 miles of range in just 10 minutes," but they caution that this figure can "vary" depending on factors such as the current state of the battery, the power capability of the charging station, and ambient temperature, among other variables. Additionally, bidirectional charging for V2H emergency home backup will be available later.

Chevy Equinox EV: impressive performance, competitive range and price

In our evaluation, the Equinox EV surpassed our expectations, proving to be not only capable but also highly competitive. It offers a range comparable to that of the Tesla Model Y, but at a slightly lower cost. We are hopeful that its navigation system will guide drivers to charging stations as efficiently as Tesla's. Notably, it is a new and modern electric vehicle, unlike the now more established Model Y, and it belongs to the popular small crossover EV category. Chevrolet has announced that it is ready to produce up to 150,000 units annually, contingent on consumer demand.

A significant challenge for the electric Equinox could be the inconsistent performance of sales staff at Chevrolet's independently owned and operated franchised dealerships.

At the driving event, a Chevrolet executive informed members of the press, "We were told this model needs to be perfect from the start." In our opinion, the car has met that standard. Now, let's hope the sales strategy, particularly for the increasing number of first-time electric vehicle buyers, is equally successful.
