Zak Brown Identifies Key Weakness in Red Bull, Sees Opportunity for McLaren in F1 Title Race
Zak Brown sees a chance for McLaren in the F1 championship battle: “I believe we all misjudged that.”
Zak Brown has pointed out a significant flaw in Red Bull's chances for the F1 title.
Zak Brown has called on McLaren to take advantage of the situation where only one Red Bull car is earning significant points, as Sergio Perez's poor performance persisted during the Spanish Grand Prix.
Perez's challenging streak persisted during Sunday's race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where he ended up in eighth place.
Red Bull still earned the highest points in Spain, with Max Verstappen securing the victory.
Nevertheless, because of Perez's inconsistent showings, Verstappen has a larger advantage in the drivers' championship compared to Red Bull's lead in the constructors' championship.
Brown believes that McLaren has a chance to catch up – a prospect that seemed entirely out of reach following the first race of the season in Bahrain.
Brown informed Sky Sports that their team managed to make a slight dent in Ferrari's lead, while Mercedes gained some points on them.
"Ferrari is certainly attainable, but so are Mercedes and Red Bull. If Perez increases his speed, they will become extremely challenging rivals."
"We should leverage the current situation where Max is leading and Sergio is scoring points. This could help us reduce the gap in the standings."
"I believe we were mistaken in thinking that the conclusion was reached after the first race."
A year ago, McLaren significantly improved their performance with a major update in Austria.
Since that time, McLaren has regularly competed for podium finishes or race victories.
Brown is enthusiastic about McLaren's opportunities with four races scheduled over the next five weeks.
He expressed his enthusiasm for numerous races, stating that the more races there are, the better it is from his perspective.
"We need to maintain our current approach. I believe Andrea [Stella] provides excellent guidance for the team."
"We stay highly concentrated. We approach each race individually. Naturally, we consider the future for aspects like development. However, our current focus is on Austria, and we won't be concerned with Silverstone except for the work being done by the team at the factory to keep improving the car."
