Yamaha’s Chassis Strategy Shows Promise as Quartararo Leads the Charge into Q2 at San Marino GP
Yamaha outlines strategy for chassis following Fabio Quartararo's rapid entry into Q2
Yamaha responds to the events of Friday at the San Marino MotoGP
Yamaha had a positive Friday at Misano, with Fabio Quartararo performing well enough to advance to Q2.
Quartararo secured the ninth-quickest time during Friday's practice session before the San Marino MotoGP.
It's an uncommon day filled with hope for the beleaguered manufacturing company in Japan
"The San Marino race weekend kicked off positively, particularly for Fabio," commented team leader Massimo Meregalli.
From the get-go in this morning's FP1 session, he was in high spirits. Aiming for the top 10 during the Practice was his goal, and he exerted considerable effort to turn that into a reality.
"This outcome is promising: advancing directly to Q2 is sure to benefit him for the rest of the weekend."
He experimented with a different chassis today, as did Alex. They both responded favorably, leading to the decision to continue its use for the following two days.
"Alex's performance on the track showed progress from the private Misano trial. We plan to examine the information collected and adjust the motorcycle's configuration tonight. This way, by tomorrow morning's FP2, we aim to assist him in advancing further."
Quartararo expressed, "Following this morning's session, we were aware that challenges lay ahead."
"I was positioned fifth, but it's important to consider that only we and Honda had previously conducted tests here."
"I anticipated a challenging afternoon, but ultimately, we've secured a spot within the top 10. Achieving this was our aim, so I'm quite pleased.
"I believe the new chassis we tested today showed some improvement. We're optimistic about enhancing the grip further tomorrow by experimenting with various adjustments."
Alex Rins, positioned 17th on Friday, mentioned, "We experimented with a new chassis, and it performs quite effectively."
"Making a direct comparison is challenging due to the increased grip levels here, yet today, I managed to clock in a second quicker than my time in the test."
"Indeed, the motorcycle showed some improvement today. Alternatively, it could be that I was in a testing mindset previously, which meant I wasn't exerting myself as much as I typically would on a Grand Prix weekend.
In any case, the frame was somewhat improved, yet we're still facing some challenges. We combined the configuration from the test with the one from Aragon, but it didn't perform as well as I had anticipated.
"It wasn't terrible, yet there remains significant room for enhancement."
Yamaha's spirits have been lifted by securing the Pramac satellite team, which is set to come on board in 2025.
Bringing on board Miguel Oliveira (and likely to be joined by Jack Miller) will equip them with a duo of seasoned riders, whose insights are anticipated to accelerate Yamaha's progression.
