Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 80,000 ID.4 EVs Over Safety-Standard Violating Screen Glitches

Volkswagen has issued a recall for almost 80,000 ID.4 EVs in the United States and over 8,000 in Canada. The recall is because of problems with the vehicles' gauge clusters and infotainment systems, which may reboot unexpectedly or fail to boot up at all.

The problem, which probably includes a range of the reported and recorded instances of screen flickering and unexpected restarts, could lead to a momentary failure of the car's active safety features when in motion. Volkswagen has introduced several solutions to address the issues with this problematic system.

VW points out that this problem could result in the absence of speedometer data and the back-up camera view, which would put them in violation of the national automotive safety regulations.

Volkswagen has identified that roughly 1% of the 88,004 vehicles they've recalled—which includes 79,953 from the U.S. and 8,051 from Canada—may be impacted by the problem, which translates to almost 9,000 vehicles across North America. The company has acknowledged 354 warranty claims tied to this problem as of February.

The solution for the ID.4 recall involves a software patch for both a control unit and the infotainment system, which has been implemented in the production line. Documents submitted to federal authorities show that this fix is not yet ready for the cars that have been recalled. However, once it is, car owners will need to visit a dealer to get the update installed. Vehicle owners will be informed about this starting from July 12.
