Unstoppable Max Verstappen secures commanding pole position at Austrian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen remained unbeatable, clinching his second pole in two days in Austria.
Max Verstappen showcased exceptional skill during the qualifying rounds, securing a commanding pole position for the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver clocked a time of 1 minute 4.314 seconds, finishing 0.404 seconds ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris. George Russell, driving for Mercedes, secured third place, trailing by half a second.
Verstappen had secured pole position in the opening seven races of the season, but today's performance is his first time leading regular qualifying in four rounds. Additionally, it is his seventh straight pole position at the Red Bull Ring.
"The qualifying session went very smoothly," Verstappen mentioned after securing his 40th pole position in Formula 1. "We made some tweaks to the car based on what we learned earlier today, and I believe they paid off."
Naturally, the track temperature has risen compared to yesterday, which made driving a bit more challenging. However, the car's performance improved significantly for me today. I was able to push harder through the corners, and each run went smoothly, making the experience quite enjoyable.
"It’s been quite some time since we last secured pole position for a Grand Prix, so this is fantastic. It feels amazing. The team has put in a lot of effort to enhance the car’s performance, and I believe this achievement speaks volumes."
"With any luck, we can demonstrate that in the race tomorrow."
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari secured the fourth-fastest time, followed by Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes. Charles Leclerc's initial best time was invalidated due to exceeding track limits at the final corner.
Oscar Piastri also encountered issues with track limits when he went off course at Turn 6. As a result, his fastest lap was invalidated, placing him in seventh position.
Sergio Perez managed to secure the eighth position in qualifying, finishing 0.888 seconds behind his Red Bull teammate, Verstappen.
Nico Hulkenberg finished in the top 10 for Haas, while Esteban Ocon secured a spot in the top 10 for Alpine.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo will start from 11th position on the grid after just missing out on advancing to Q3.
Kevin Magnussen secured the 12th position for Haas, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly came in next. Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull followed, and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin ended up in the 15th spot after a challenging session.
On Saturday, Alex Albon delivered an impressive performance during the standard qualifying session, yet narrowly missed advancing to Q2, finishing in 16th place with his Williams car. He ended up ahead of Lance Stroll from Aston Martin.
Valtteri Bottas finished in 18th place, while Logan Sargeant’s Williams car was positioned between the two Sauber drivers. Zhou Guanyu recorded the slowest time for the second consecutive day.
