Under Pressure: Sergio Perez’s Struggles Cast Shadows Over Red Bull’s Championship Hopes
Sergio Perez is significantly off the pace, and his performance is proving to be a major setback for Red Bull, especially if the team aims to secure the highest possible points.
Red Bull has been cautioned that Sergio Perez's performance is "catastrophic" for the team.
Immediately after the embattled Mexican driver secured a new contract that was supposed to settle questions about his future with Red Bull, a series of poor performances has sparked fresh controversy.
Perez did not complete the races in Monaco or Canada, and then secured only eighth place in Spain last weekend, while his teammate Max Verstappen clinched another victory.
Concerningly for Perez, he ended up trailing behind all the McLarens, Mercedes, and Ferraris in Spain.
"It's hard to grasp," Damon Hill remarked on Sky Sports.
"He has the top-performing car, second only to McLaren."
"But he can’t keep up with Max, which translates to a difference of four or five positions on the grid."
"It would be catastrophic for Red Bull if their goal is to achieve the highest possible points."
“Assisting Max and protecting positions during races, he is far from being at the required level.”
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull, jumped to Perez's defense.
He mentioned, "I believe we increased our advantage today, if I'm correct?"
“It’s important for Checo to be involved. He’s aware of this, and so is the team.
"If he ranks towards the lower part of the top eight, you lose strategic flexibility, whether you decide to split it or other strategies. Checo performed exceptionally well in the first four or five races this year; we just need to help him regain that mindset."
Red Bull earned the highest points total among all teams at the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, primarily due to Verstappen's win.
They continue to lead the constructors' championship, while Perez is in fifth place in the drivers' standings, following behind Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz.
This weekend's F1 Austrian Grand Prix, which serves as the home race for the Red Bull team, could see intense focus on Perez.
Danica Patrick suggested that he should demonstrate speed right from the start of the weekend and secure a strong position.
This approach boosts his confidence for the qualifying rounds, helping him secure a more favorable position.
"That's precisely the area where he has the greatest potential for improvement."
“After that, he should use his intelligence during the races. The car he has is exceptionally good.
"To maximize benefits and avoid errors is the way for him to present himself in the best possible light."
