Tesla Charges Ahead: Patents Reveal Plans for Wireless EV Charging System
Tesla secures patent for cordless electric vehicle charging technology
Tesla has obtained a patent for a cordless system to charge electric vehicles, suggesting that the firm is moving towards making this long-anticipated technology a reality for its lineup of electric cars.
A patent application was observed by a Twitter user, who goes by the handle SETI Park, and it appears that Tesla was the company to file it on February 2nd. The document became public through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on September 6th. The application details a type of wireless charging that involves transferring electrical power via a coil from a power source to another coil located on an electric vehicle, which is currently the prevalent technology for charging without wires.
Wireless charging station for Model S
During an investor briefing in March 2023, Tesla hinted at the development of a wireless charging system, showcasing a slide with an image of a Model S positioned over what seemed to be a wireless charging mat in a home garage setting.
Tesla remained silent on the prospect of introducing wireless charging for electric vehicles initially, and even on the timeline for such an offering. However, a few months down the line, keen observers from the EV fan community spotted that the carmaker seemed to have taken over Wiferion, a wireless charging company based in Germany. Tesla maintained its silence regarding the takeover and potential wireless charging developments. Nonetheless, in December, Franz von Holzhausen, the chief design officer at Tesla, acknowledged to Jay Leno that the company is indeed developing wireless charging technology.
The Tesla Model 3 now features a WiTricity wireless charging system.
The ease of use offered by wireless charging could sway potential electric vehicle buyers since it eliminates the need to plug in the vehicle every evening. Instead, drivers are just reminded to align their car over a charging mat. Currently, WiTricity stands as the sole provider of this technology for original equipment outside China, specifically for the Genesis GV60 available in South Korea.
Tesla may see an improvement in operational times for autonomous vehicles, including the potentially profitable autonomous taxis that CEO Elon Musk is consistently striving to develop, with the integration of wireless charging.
