Software Snags Stall Volkswagen’s Electric Future: Next-Gen EVs Face Delays
Upcoming Volkswagen electric vehicles face postponement because of software troubles, according to Autoblog, which references reports from German news sources.
Persistent problems within the Cariad software unit of Volkswagen Group have caused a delay in the debut of their Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is set to replace the existing MEB platform for electric vehicles. Initially scheduled for 2024, the launch has now been postponed to a yet-to-be-determined time beyond 2026, as per the report.
Upcoming 2024 Model of the Volkswagen
Audi had been expected to lead the Volkswagen Group in adopting the SSP platform, with VW Group's chief, Oliver Blume, previously indicating a 2026 debut for Audi's inaugural model built on this base. However, this timeline has now been pushed back to 2027 or 2028. Amid these delays, there's talk in the German press that Audi is considering the acquisition of a platform from a Chinese car manufacturer.
Technical problems are causing Volkswagen to potentially maintain the existing model of the ID.4 until 2029, which would make the vehicle nearly a decade old, according to Autoblog. These issues are also expected to push back the release of an all-electric VW Golf and a sizeable electric SUV named the T-Sport, possibly postponing their debut from 2028 to 2031. In the meantime, Volkswagen has introduced a secondary brand under the ID line in China and has pledged to invest in advanced solid-state battery technology.
The 2025 model of the Volkswagen ID
According to Autoblog, a seven-seater SUV from Porsche, constructed using the SSP platform, is currently undergoing trials and is expected to launch in 2027. However, it may face postponements due to software issues.
News has surfaced regarding technical issues at Volkswagen, shedding more light on the company's decision to invest in Rivian. Volkswagen announced in June that it would invest $5 billion in the American car manufacturer Rivian to utilize their software and advanced electronics systems.
