Rosberg Critiques McLaren’s Equal Treatment Strategy Amidst Norris-Piastri Clash
Nico Rosberg weighs in on the McLaren team orders controversy
Nico Rosberg evaluates the Lando Norris vs. Oscar Piastri showdown
Nico Rosberg claims that McLaren's choice to allow their drivers to compete against each other is "harming" Lando Norris.
However, he emphasized that Charles Leclerc's victory at the Italian Grand Prix for Ferrari was not inevitably due to the choices made by McLaren's leadership.
Norris began the race in pole position but was quickly passed by his teammate Oscar Piastri during the first lap, which put him at a disadvantage. He never managed to regain his position and consequently lost the opportunity to make a significant impact on Max Verstappen's standing in the drivers' championship.
Former Formula 1 champion Rosberg provided an analysis for Sky Sports on McLaren's approach of treating both of their drivers equally without giving preference to either one.
"Papaya sets the standard in racing, but make sure to compete with integrity," stated Rosberg.
Sources indicate that Lando believed Oscar exceeded acceptable boundaries during their contest at Turn 4. Lando felt the move was not entirely just and equitable.
"Intense debates are expected inside the McLaren team's motorhome."
"It's really challenging to handle. It's a delicate balance. You can put those guidelines in place, but did Oscar exceed the boundaries set by the Papaya rules?"
"I believe Oscar performed exceptionally well. He vacated the area and executed his task superbly."
Andrea Stella, who is currently the team principal for McLaren, was employed at Ferrari during the time when Michael Schumacher was the clear top driver.
However, Rosberg asserts that he is not responsible for McLaren's intriguing approach of giving equal treatment to both drivers.
"The philosophy originates directly from the top leadership, specifically from Zak Brown," he stated.
"At McLaren, we consider both of our drivers as top-tier, and this philosophy has been a fundamental part of the team for many years. Andrea is currently implementing this strategy."
"They believed they had a chance at victory right up until the final moments."
"The team allowed their drivers to compete against each other, adding an element of fun and excitement. Ultimately, Ferrari took a gamble with their strategy, which paid off and outsmarted the competition."
The issue at hand involves Lando and the drivers' championship. The team has opted to continue treating both drivers as equals, without giving Lando any special preference. While this is the route they've chosen, it is undoubtedly having a negative impact on Lando.
Are McLaren reluctant to take risks?
Norris trails Verstappen by 62 points, even though Verstappen is at the top of the drivers' standings despite experiencing a slump in performance.
Karun Chandhok stated that in order to compete in the drivers’ championship, it is essential to ensure Lando secures all possible points.
“Conversely, allowing them to compete freely has benefited Oscar. He delivered an excellent performance and was the quickest McLaren driver today.
"In the long run, it is advantageous to have Oscar on your side, too."
Rosberg commented, “Lando is in great form right now. He’s performing excellently and his self-assurance is very strong.”
"It’s encouraging that he senses ‘I have an opportunity’. He remains the unlikely contender."
"Lando made an error at Turn 4. Positioned on the inside and in control, he was overly cautious."
Is McLaren overly cautious when it comes to taking chances?
Rosberg responded: “It's hard to determine if they were too cautious. They were taken by surprise today. Nobody could have foreseen that Ferrari's strategy would succeed. Based on today's events, I wouldn't label them as overly risk-averse.”
"Risk averse? Hardly! The team allowed their drivers to engage in an intense duel, going head-to-head, with Lando nearly losing control during the clash with Oscar."
Rosberg asserted that the McLaren drivers' skirmish on the first lap did not deprive them of winning the race.
"Not exactly. Oscar had an outstanding race. They maximized the car's potential today," he stated.
