Rosberg Criticizes McLaren’s Equal Driver Policy: ‘Hurting’ Norris in Championship Battle
Nico Rosberg’s perspective on the McLaren team orders controversy
Nico Rosberg evaluates the rivalry between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
Nico Rosberg claims that McLaren allowing their drivers to compete freely is detrimental to Lando Norris.
He maintained that Ferrari's Charles Leclerc's victory at the F1 Italian Grand Prix wasn't necessarily due to the choices made by McLaren's leadership.
Norris began the race in pole position but was quickly overtaken by his teammate Oscar Piastri during the first lap, which put him at a disadvantage. As a result, he was unable to regain his lead and missed an opportunity to significantly challenge Max Verstappen in the drivers' championship standings.
Former Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg discussed McLaren's strategy of treating both drivers equally during a segment on Sky Sports.
"Papaya regulations dictate competition, but it must be conducted justly," remarked Rosberg.
According to what we've heard, Lando felt that Oscar crossed the line during their contest at Turn 4. He believed it wasn't a completely fair move.
"Intense debates are expected to take place in the McLaren team’s motorhome."
Managing this situation is quite challenging. It's a delicate balance. Although the guidelines are clearly stated, did Oscar exceed the boundaries set by the Papaya rules?
"I believe Oscar performed excellently. He vacated the area and executed his task superbly."
Andrea Stella, who is now the team principal for McLaren, was previously employed at Ferrari during the time when Michael Schumacher was the clear top driver.
However, Rosberg asserts that he is not responsible for McLaren's intriguing approach of giving equal treatment to both drivers.
"This approach originates from the highest level and is driven by Zak Brown," he stated.
"We have two primary drivers, reflecting the core tradition of McLaren that dates back many years. Andrea is putting that strategy into action."
"They believed they had a chance of winning until the final moments."
"The team allowed their drivers to compete against each other, making the race thrilling. Ultimately, Ferrari took a gamble with their strategy and outmaneuvered them."
The situation with Lando and the drivers’ championship raises questions. The team has chosen to continue treating both drivers as equals, without giving Lando any preferential treatment. That’s their decision. However, it is certainly having a negative impact on Lando.
Do McLaren avoid taking risks?
Norris trails Verstappen by 62 points, even though Verstappen tops the drivers' standings despite going through a rough patch.
Karun Chandhok mentioned that to compete for the drivers' championship, they must ensure Lando receives all possible points.
"Conversely, they allowed them to compete freely, which benefits Oscar. He performed brilliantly and was the quickest McLaren driver today."
"In the long run, it's more advantageous to have Oscar on your side."
Rosberg commented that Lando is performing exceptionally, noting that his driving skills are impressive and his confidence is soaring.
"It’s encouraging that he senses an opportunity. He remains the unlikely candidate."
"Lando made an error at Turn 4. Positioned on the inside with the situation under control, he was overly cautious."
Is McLaren overly cautious when it comes to taking chances?
Nico Rosberg responded by saying, "Were they too cautious? It's hard to determine. They were taken by surprise today. No one could have foreseen that Ferrari's strategy would succeed. I wouldn't label them as such, based on today's events."
“Risk averse? They allow their drivers to compete fiercely! They raced side by side, and Lando nearly lost control while competing against Oscar.”
Rosberg asserted that the McLarens' duel during the first lap didn't prevent them from winning the race.
"Not necessarily. Oscar had an outstanding performance in the race. They maximized the potential of the car today," he commented.
