Rising Tensions and Confusion at McLaren: Lando Norris Warned as Oscar Piastri Challenges No1 Status Amid Stellar Performances
McLaren "baffled" by suggestions to reconsider Lando Norris's lead driver role
The performance of Oscar Piastri might prompt a reassessment within McLaren, according to reports
Eddie Jordan believes that Oscar Piastri might surpass Lando Norris as the leading driver for McLaren in the near future.
McLaren officially does not distinguish between a primary or secondary driver, yet both Norris and Piastri have secured Grand Prix wins this season.
Norris achieved his initial victory in Miami prior to Piastri securing his first win in Hungary.
Piastri grabbed attention in Belgium, ending up behind George Russell, who was later disqualified, and the ultimate victor, Lewis Hamilton.
"Jordan, a former Formula 1 team owner, highlighted on the Formula For Success podcast how the initial clash and Piastri's ability to keep up with the two Mercedes were standout moments."
"Toto is likely considering, 'we need to devise a strategy to counter McLaren's current momentum, given their exceptional duo of drivers who are demonstrating remarkable strength'."
"The pair will compete fiercely against one another, battling for positions on the grid and race outcomes… it's exciting for fans but quite the rollercoaster for their team.
"They are utterly perplexed. Is Lando the top driver in that team? I answered unequivocally, yes. And I would maintain that stance today, should you inquire."
"However, after a few more competitions, we might need to revise that statement."
David Coulthard commented, "This situation presents a positive challenge for McLaren, having two leading drivers who motivate one another."
The tranquility within McLaren faced jeopardy in Hungary, as Norris underwent multiple tense laps before ultimately adhering to the team's directive to allow his teammate to pass.
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, contested McLaren's decision to support Piastri's win.
"Lando is the seasoned driver and I believe he's the top driver," he conveyed to Sky Sports.
He emphasized, "Should we fall short by seven points come year's end in this championship, it's clear that every point matters.
"Various teams approach racing distinctively. However, Lando emerges as the primary competitor, and eventually, you must focus all your efforts in one direction."
However, McLaren have avoided labeling Norris as their definitive number one choice.
CEO Zak Brown reflected on their impressive season, stating, "Achieving ten consecutive podium finishes isn't too shabby. Currently, we're second in the drivers' standings, and both of our drivers have secured victories."
"However, it's important to acknowledge our shortcomings. Throughout the season, we've encountered mistakes. We aim to take lessons from these experiences and enhance our performance."
