Perez Stresses Recent F1 Struggles ‘Different’ from Last Year’s Slump, Confident in Red Bull’s Progress
Sergio Perez insists that his current challenges in Formula 1 are not the same as the difficulties he faced last year. Perez elaborates on his recent decline in performance.
According to Sergio Perez, his current downturn in F1 performance is fundamentally “different” from the dip he experienced last year.
Following victories in two of the first four races in 2023, Perez's performance deteriorated.
The Mexican driver had a terrible streak in qualifying, missing out on Q3 for five races in a row.
His decline in performance happened at the same time as his return to Europe, a situation that has repeated itself this year.
Perez has claimed that his recent challenges are not connected to those he encountered the previous year.
"They're definitely different," Perez mentioned to the press, including Crash.net. "We have a much better grasp of the car this year and our overall understanding has improved. Last year, we attempted to address too many issues with the setup."
"We've really worsened things. However, I think we now have a much clearer grasp of the situation, although recent events have set us back considerably."
Perez experienced a crash during the Canadian Grand Prix and received a penalty afterwards for re-entering the pit lane in a hazardous way.
The ex-Racing Point driver disclosed that during the interval between races, Red Bull discovered "numerous problems" Perez was experiencing with the car's configuration.
"Following the weekend, we discovered multiple problems," Perez said. "It's a weekend we can dismiss because we faced more than one issue. Initially, we believed there was only one problem, but later we identified a few more. Overall, it was just a tough weekend, and now we're reflecting on how we can improve."
"The past few days have been quite intense at the factory as we've put in a lot of effort. We've gained a solid grasp of the situation. In the world of Formula 1, the differences are so minute that even small misplacements can have an impact."
"The positive aspect is that, although experiencing a series of poor performances is really painful, returning to Barcelona gives me a chance to regain my previous momentum with a strong race."
After nine races, Perez is positioned fifth in the drivers' standings, trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by 62 points.
