Pedro Acosta Overcomes ‘Stupid Crashes’ to Lead KTM on Italian MotoGP’s Turbulent Opening Day
Pedro Acosta: "Typical Friday, albeit marred by two foolish accidents."
Pedro Acosta ended the first day of the Italian MotoGP ahead of his KTM counterparts, yet the debutant didn't have an easy ride.
Acosta experienced two falls, one during each training period, with a rapid slide at turn 13 that totally destroyed one of his RC16 motorcycles.
Every time Acosta mounted his GASGAS motorcycle, his speed was undeniable. However, the accidents he experienced, which he referred to as 'stupid,' certainly impeded his performance.
"Acosta remarked, 'For us, it seemed like a typical Friday, except for the two foolish accidents. The first incident occurred in the morning when we veered off course, and during the second, our tyres hadn’t heated sufficiently. However, these are all elements of the learning process."
"Following the second accident, we significantly enhanced our performance and succeeded in achieving a quick lap."
"Nonetheless, due to the accidents, our attention on the race tempo was compromised today. Therefore, our priority tomorrow morning, before the qualifiers, will be to concentrate on this aspect. After that, we'll have a clearer understanding of our competitiveness in the races."
Augusto Fernandez, who is experiencing a challenging second season in MotoGP, lagged behind Acosta by almost 1.6 seconds, remaining his team-mate.
The Spanish driver, unsurprisingly, described his Friday with disappointment, citing vibrations that troubled him throughout the practice session.
"Fernandez described the day as extremely challenging, perhaps the most difficult one yet," he stated. "From the season's outset, I've had issues gaining confidence with the bike during high-speed turns, and considering Mugello's layout emphasizes these, it's understandable that I didn't feel comfortable today at all.
"Tonight, there's a significant amount of effort needed to improve our connection with the bike's front, minimize the shaking, and ideally, bridge the gap to the competitors, especially Jack Miller."
