Pecco Bagnaia’s Masterful Strategy Leads to Victory at Italian MotoGP: An Impossible Feat Surpassed
Francesco Bagnaia successfully implements his game plan: "Achieving more was out of the question."
Francesco Bagnaia concedes that his plan involved taking the forefront at the second corner of the Italian MotoGP, stating that anything beyond that "was out of the question."
Similar to his performance in Qatar, world champion Francesco Bagnaia had an impressive launch from the second row, quickly taking command of the race from the outset.
Bagnaia surged ahead from fifth place to the lead within just two turns and then dominated the race, leading all the way to the finish line.
With three laps remaining, Bagnaia faced a challenge as Martin closed the gap to within three tenths for the first time since the opening lap.
Nonetheless, the current world champion made a decisive move, extending the lead to one second once again.
Following his victory, Bagnaia shared, "The day kicked off on a high note as I got a message from a legend. He mentioned that today, it seemed likely I would win."
"It was remarkable. I'm extremely pleased, content, and incredibly proud. This weekend was outstanding. I had a great start in the race and yesterday was amazing."
"Today, being ahead in the opening lap was crucial for setting my rhythm. The plan for the initial two turns executed flawlessly. Beyond that, nothing more could be done."
Bagnaia mentioned a 'legend,' referring to Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss, highlighting that Bagnaia commemorated his victories in Mugello by playing an electric guitar.
Having secured his third victory on the Italian track, Bagnaia was overwhelmed by the emotion he experienced while standing on the podium.
"Truthfully, being there as an Italian and gazing at the podium, witnessing the crowd adorned in our caps, our numbers, it's simply astonishing," Bagnaia further expressed.
"It adds an extra layer of enchantment and wonder. Mugello holds a dear place in my heart. My affection for it began in my early years and continues to this day.
"In 2022, there was a noticeable increase in social interactions, and 2023 continued positively, but this year has truly returned to the familiar ways of the past."
Talking about his approach in the first two corners, which was key to securing the win, Bagnaia mentioned last season, referring to when he lost the lead right at the start.
"Taking a chance [to pass Martin] isn't really the issue; it's about being strategically placed at the right time," Bagnaia explained.
"I opted for the outside position recalling how Miller surpassed me last year, and I stayed on the outside to gain the inside advantage for the second corner.
"I attempted to mimic his approach, yet Maverick decelerated sharply, nearly derailing my plan. However, noticing his drift towards the outer edge, I opted to narrow his path, which turned out to be an excellent choice.
"Following that, I noticed Jorge had a weak exit from the first corner, so I aimed to leverage this opportunity and pass him in the second corner."
