Millennial Magnet: 2025 Cadillac Optiq EV Softens Art & Science Design While Amping Up Luxury and Tech
Cadillac introduces a new electric vehicle targeting Millennials, easing up on its Art & Science design philosophy. The latest addition to Cadillac's electric lineup offers advanced features and size, with a price tag that doesn't exactly scream budget-friendly.
Cadillac has announced that its upcoming 2025 Optiq model, expected to hit the market later this year, will be priced at approximately $54,000, destination fees included. The new vehicle boasts an impressive 300-mile range. Although its cost exceeds that of Cadillac's current XT4, which starts at $39,090, the Optiq could see a significant price reduction to match the current XT5's base price of $47,290, should it be eligible for the federal EV tax incentive of $7,500. This would make the Optiq competitively priced while offering increased space for both passengers and luggage.
Green Car Reports recently had a chance to examine the Optiq closely, and it's clear from the get-go that this car is moving away from Cadillac's traditional Art & Science design language, which was known for its angular shapes and stark lines. The Optiq introduces a gentler approach to bodywork, featuring a reduced height in the hood and a smoother, curved roof. At the front, it presents a less daunting and angular appearance compared to other models in the lineup, such as the bigger Cadillac Lyriq EV. Interestingly, the Optiq relies on the strategic use of lighting to give the illusion of sharp edges, rather than actual hard lines, allowing for a design that's both visually striking and more conducive to aerodynamics.

Optiq's design prioritizes aerodynamics and illumination
Cadillac's design chief Hoon Kim shared with me, "We emphasized a sleek, sporty aesthetic for the Optiq, which led us to design it with the lowest profile feasible."
Numerous intricacies demand attention. Cadillac employs an intricate laser-etching technique across the grille section to define its distinctive illumination signature. Additionally, it employs precision printing to apply a graphic motif on the acoustic laminate glass of the rear quarter panel, mirroring the Cadillac emblem. All Optiq models come with a permanent glass roof.

A standout feature is the rear lights' unique design, which creates an illusion as they extend down the back pillars. They appear to briefly vanish under the edges of the beltline before coming back into view lower down.
It's somewhat unexpected that in a time where electric vehicle designs are pushing boundaries, the Cadillac Optiq has a striking resemblance in shape to its relative, the Chevy Equinox EV. The Optiq has identical dimensions in terms of its 116.3-inch wheelbase and its overall length of around 190 inches, and it also features the same 85-kwh battery pack.

Optiq comes equipped with an all-wheel-drive system that favors the front wheels, featuring a more powerful permanent-magnet motor in the front delivering approximately 200 horsepower, and a supporting induction motor at the rear with roughly 90 horsepower. This setup enables the vehicle to operate predominantly in front-wheel-drive mode during constant-speed cruising, and together, the motors offer a projected total of 300 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.
Cadillac representatives explain that the Lyriq epitomizes luxury, whereas the Optiq targets a younger and more energetic demographic, emphasizing athleticism. The brand has leveraged the expertise of an engineer from the Blackwing team to infuse the Optiq with a more dynamic driving sensation, which is expected to reflect in its performance and maneuverability. Additionally, the vehicle boasts a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, complemented by hitch attachments to facilitate the transport of various equipment.
Upcoming 2025 Cadillac Model
The Optiq is set to feature various driving modes including Tour, Sport, and Snow/Ice, as well as customizable My Mode options. It will be equipped with a one-pedal driving feature that enables deceleration and halting without the need for the brake pedal in certain conditions. During the preview, Cadillac indicated that they were still in the process of deciding on the in-cabin propulsion noises, ensuring they will be distinct from those in the Lyriq.
Cadillac's electric vehicles are getting an updated charging port door. Differing from the Lyriq's version, this streamlined design will be featured in future Cadillac electric models, such as the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ. Additionally, the vehicle's headlights will provide a quick visual indication of the battery's charge level.

Cadillac has identified that potential buyers are particularly interested in how quickly the vehicle can charge and the attractiveness of the cabin. The company is targeting a rapid recharge capability, with the goal of regaining 79 miles of range in just 10 minutes through DC fast-charging, although they have not specified the peak charging speed.
Unique features of the cabin include special decorations such as textured decorative cloth created from entirely repurposed substances, alongside PaperWood veneer, a combination of tulip timber and reused newsprint. Surprisingly, portions of the text remain legible.
Cadillac Aims to Attract New Luxury Customers with the Optiq
Cadillac has its sights set on capturing the attention of "older Millennials," ranging from their late 20s to their 30s, with the introduction of the Optiq. This demographic, which now includes individuals over 40, is the primary focus for Cadillac's push into the luxury market. To appeal to this age group, Cadillac is emphasizing comfort features such as massage seats and seats with enhanced back support. These seats have been redesigned based on a model initially created by GM in Europe, but have been modified to be broader to cater to this target audience.

The wide-open space at the front benefits from the underfloor battery placement, allowing for a more accessible cargo area, although it lacks a storage compartment in the front (also known as a frunk). The rear seating offers ample space for the legs, yet I found my head brushing against the rear frame of the glass ceiling.
GM boasts that their 33-inch dashboard screen boasts an impressive 9k resolution and the capability to display over a billion hues. Although this screen is the focal point of the dashboard, it doesn't integrate with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Instead, it offers a Google-developed in-car entertainment system, which requires a dedicated data plan for the car, as it doesn't utilize your phone's data. Moreover, GM has thoughtfully designed the interface, providing the Optiq with physical buttons for adjusting the temperature, distinguishing them from the touchscreen controls.

GM plans to equip the Optiq with a complimentary three-year subscription to their Super Cruise driver assistance technology. Additionally, the vehicle will come standard with adaptive cruise control, an automated parking feature, and a comprehensive range of active safety systems.
The upcoming Optiq model will join the roster of General Motors' electric vehicles produced in Mexico. This vehicle's manufacturing will commence this autumn at the Ramos Arizpe facility, which is also responsible for assembling the Chevy Equinox EV, Blazer EV, and the Honda Prologue. Additionally, production is set to increase shortly in China. General Motors is placing significant market expectations on China, the United States, and Europe.
Cadillac is set to provide both Luxury and Sport versions of the Optiq, although the specific distinctions between the two have not been fully disclosed.

As General Motors introduces a greater variety of Ultium-powered electric vehicles, particularly an expanded lineup of electric Cadillacs such as the spacious Lyriq, it evokes memories of the 1980s GM and the budget-conscious luxury of the Cimarron. The challenge remains: How can they craft more unique electric vehicles without falling into the trap of simply rebranding? The answer should become clearer later in the year when Cadillac is expected to reveal further specifications and features. However, the current glimpse of the Optiq's sleek and plush interior suggests that Cadillac is on the right track.
