Mercedes Signals Further Upgrades After Promising Spanish GP Performance: ‘That Gap Has Been Coming Down and Down…
Mercedes hints at more improvements following a positive performance at the Spanish Grand Prix
"The difference has been decreasing continuously…"
Mercedes expressed strong optimism about their performance at the Spanish Grand Prix and hinted at the possibility of additional upgrades for the forthcoming F1 races.
For the second consecutive race, Mercedes earned a podium finish through their performance, with Lewis Hamilton securing his first third-place finish of the season in Barcelona. He was followed by his teammate George Russell, who came in fourth.
Mercedes has become confident they are now managing their problematic W15 car effectively, following a series of recent development efforts.
In Mercedes' latest post-race analysis video, their trackside performance director, Andrew Shovlin, mentioned that prior to their trip to Barcelona, the team was contemplating whether George's pole position and their strong performance in Montreal were due to unique characteristics of the Montreal circuit.
"Montreal is unique. The track has many slow corners and the weather was cold, making it difficult to generate heat."
Barcelona is much warmer and features higher speeds and greater energy. The track serves as a good indicator of a car's strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it was very promising for us to see that we were fast enough to secure a podium finish there without relying on any other competitors' bad luck.
“It's evident that the car is performing effectively. However, it's also clear that we must consistently provide upgrades, and we're putting in a lot of effort to achieve this. The gap has been steadily decreasing, and we hope to keep narrowing it until we reach a stage where we can compete for victories.”
Mercedes promises 'more to come'
Shovlin commented: "Having both drivers finish on the podium in the last couple of races shows the strides we've made thanks to the dedicated efforts at the factory. However, we're aiming higher; we want to surpass third place finishes."
"We're putting in a lot of effort, and we have strategies and supplies on the way, with the hope that everything will come together successfully."
"Regarding the Austrian track, it's quite challenging and features a sprint race format. This means we only have one hour to fine-tune and prepare the car. Fortunately, the latest modifications to the car have made it more manageable."
"The drivers are more satisfied with the initial setups, leading to fewer adjustments. This should give us a strong starting position for the weekend."
"There are two rounds of qualifying and two distinct races, providing plenty of challenges. Additionally, the weather in Austria adds another layer of unpredictability; it can be scorching hot or rainy. There's certainly a lot to consider."
"The drivers and the team are really enjoying racing our current car. We're competing for higher points and are eager to get started in Austria."
When questioned about the upcoming enhancements, Shovlin responded cautiously: "We have a strategy to enhance the car's performance, focusing on areas we've been recently developing. This includes improvements in aerodynamics and mechanical aspects, which will be implemented in the upcoming races."
"We're hesitant to disclose the timing of our upcoming update because it might prompt our competitors to accelerate their own releases. However, we definitely have more updates in the pipeline."
"We're observing the narrowing of the gap, and as it decreases, it’s inspiring people to make incremental improvements. Lately, the qualifying rounds have been incredibly close."
"Even a slight improvement of a few hundredths of a second can move a car up the starting grid, giving a better chance for a higher finish. We're working at full capacity. However, I won't disclose our development plans for the upcoming races."
