Mercedes report Lewis Hamilton ‘sabotage’ email to police and criticize “lunatics”

Mercedes has involved law enforcement to probe an anonymous message that alleges the team of 'sabotage' and putting Lewis Hamilton's life at risk.

Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff has announced that an anonymous email alleging the team of 'sabotaging' Lewis Hamilton has been handed over to the police.

On June 10, following the Canadian Grand Prix, an anonymous email was received. The sender, who claimed to be part of the Mercedes team, accused the team of deliberately undermining Hamilton and endangering the life of the seven-time world champion.

Mercedes maintains that the correspondence did not originate from one of their team members. Instead, it was sent by a dissatisfied supporter of Hamilton, who used a fake email address.

"It hasn't come from a team member," Wolff stated. "Receiving emails like these, and we get a lot of them, is disturbing, especially when they mention death and similar topics."

In this case, I've directed the authorities to thoroughly investigate, including tracking the IP address and phone number involved. It's essential to put an end to online harassment. Individuals should not be able to use their phones or computers to anonymously harass teams or drivers.

Lewis Hamilton, who is set to depart from Mercedes and move to Ferrari next year, emphasized before the Spanish Grand Prix that he hadn't come across the email in question. Nonetheless, he stood up for his teammate George Russell, who has been facing online harassment and criticism.

Hamilton stated that he was unaware of any negative experiences George might have been going through. He emphasized that George has consistently given his best effort each weekend and has delivered for the team, leaving no room for criticism.

“There are always aspects within a team that can be improved, and we address these through discussions and effective communication, which is something we continuously strive for.”

What did the email contain?

The Daily Mail, which reviewed the email, reported that its subject line read 'A potential death warrant for Lewis’.

The email stated: 'A number of team members are dissatisfied with the ongoing deliberate undermining of Lewis, including issues with his car, tyre strategy, race strategy, mental well-being, and the unprofessional conduct of Toto, George, and others towards him.'

"Toto is acting out of spite, similar to a wronged spouse who has cut off communication with Lewis and is now doing everything to retaliate against him. Lewis is being left out, and there are some dubious actions taking place that the public should know about."

"Pose the inquiries and the truth will emerge. Everything is documented in the data. Apart from Bono (Peter Bonnington, Hamilton’s race engineer) and those of us who care about Lewis, others are taking a perilous path that could endanger Lewis, other drivers, and even the public.
