Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff Shuts Down Max Verstappen Speculation Amid Search for Lewis Hamilton’s Successor
Toto Wolff provides an update on Mercedes' interest in Max Verstappen and potential replacements for Lewis Hamilton. Wolff clarifies that Mercedes is not currently in discussions with Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen regarding a possible transfer for the 2025 season.
Toto Wolff has stated that Mercedes is not negotiating with Max Verstappen to persuade him to leave Red Bull and join their Formula 1 team.
Mercedes have openly expressed their desire to sign Verstappen and have been actively pursuing the current world champion, as they look for someone to fill the spot of Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari.
In recent weeks, there has been widespread speculation that Mercedes might attempt to attract Verstappen away from Red Bull, even though the Dutch driver is contracted until the end of 2028. However, Wolff now appears to have dismissed the possibility of such a move.
When questioned about potential discussions between Mercedes and Verstappen, Wolff informed reporters, including those from Crash.net, during the Spanish Grand Prix, "No, we are not currently in talks because our focus needs to be on enhancing our car."
In other news, sources from Germany suggest that Mercedes has already chosen to elevate young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli to join George Russell, following only a single season in Formula 2.
However, Wolff dismissed any claims that Mercedes has already decided on their driver lineup for the next year.
He emphasized that no decision regarding the driver has been finalized yet. He explained that they intend to delay this decision for as long as possible, as the future remains uncertain.
When asked whether Mercedes' recent improvement in performance might not be enough to persuade Verstappen to leave Red Bull and join their team, Wolff responded: “We simply need to keep getting better and focus on ourselves.”
"The key priority is to improve as a team with our drivers, Lewis and George. We aim to consistently achieve podium finishes and eventually reach a point where we can secure race wins independently."
"If you possess a quality car, skilled drivers will be eager to join."
