Max Verstappen’s Key Role in Red Bull’s F1 Dominance: Christian Horner’s High Praise
Christian Horner: Max Verstappen Has a Significant Impact on Red Bull
Christian Horner has lauded Max Verstappen for playing a crucial role in Red Bull's latest achievements in Formula 1.
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, praised Max Verstappen for significantly impacting the team's performance in recent Formula 1 races.
Max Verstappen secured consecutive victories by fending off Lando Norris from McLaren in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, thereby extending his lead in the F1 world championship standings.
The current world champion secured their seventh win out of ten races, but Red Bull has been facing growing competition from McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes in the latest races.
“There were definitely some key moments today,” Horner stated. “We missed out on pole position by just two hundredths of a second yesterday, and we expected it to be a close race with Lando.”
"The beginning was critical; we opted for scrubbed tires instead of new ones, as we wanted fresh tires available later for a potential undercut."
"Max began the race well, getting side by side with Lando. There was some intense racing, with Max even going onto the grass heading into the first turn, which gave George the chance to choose his braking point and overtake on the outside. From that moment, it was clear that tyre wear would play a major role in the race, making it crucial for Max to quickly overtake George."
In the initial laps, he made a strong effort to overtake George as soon as the DRS was available. After that, he focused on managing his tires and successfully created a comfortable lead during the first stint. At that moment, we opted for an optimal race strategy regarding our pit stop timings. Meanwhile, McLaren extended their stint, leading to a different strategy.
"When you see a nine-second gap, it seems substantial, but considering the difference in tire wear – six laps on mediums and three or four on softs – that gap can close rapidly."
"Today was all about avoiding errors, and Max executed a flawless race with perfectly timed pit stops. We anticipated that Lando would close in on us towards the race's conclusion, but we believed we had a sufficient lead, and that's exactly how it unfolded."
Horner emphasized the importance of Verstappen's consistently outstanding performances, especially during periods when Red Bull did not have the fastest car on the grid.
Horner commented that the individual has consistently performed exceptionally well under pressure. He noted that while the previous year was extraordinary, this year is more typical.
"It's uncommon to win every race consistently, and we have to put in an immense effort to achieve this. Max is playing a crucial role in making a difference."
"We are aware of the areas that need improvement, have a clearer grasp of our strengths and weaknesses, and are currently performing well enough to maintain our lead in the championship."
