Max Verstappen Questions Lenient Reprimand for Charles Leclerc After Spanish GP Incident with Lando Norris
Max Verstappen seemed to challenge the F1 stewards' light punishment for Charles Leclerc during a discussion with Lando Norris in parc ferme at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen has expressed doubts about the F1 stewards' choice to issue only a reprimand to Charles Leclerc for his aggressive behavior during the last practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Leclerc received a warning after swerving into Lando Norris' McLaren in the final moments of FP3.
The event was unnecessary, and the officials considered it "unpredictable" but not "hazardous," which led to their decision.
The officials observed: "The driver of Car 16 mentioned that Car 4 blocked his path at Turn 5, causing frustration. He then had to abandon his fast lap and claimed that while attempting to move off the racing line before Turn 7, he miscalculated his car's position and lightly collided with Car 4.
"Regardless of any potential intention, the Stewards view the maneuver by Car 16 as unpredictable, though not hazardous, and therefore issue a driving reprimand consistent with previous cases."
Following the qualifying session, Verstappen and Norris were overheard discussing their recent altercation while in parc ferme.
The television captured an audio recording of a private conversation between the two drivers who will start from the front row of the grid on Sunday.
Verstappen remarked, "It's absolutely insane that Leclerc received a reprimand."
Norris exclaimed, “Is that his punishment?!”
Verstappen exclaimed, "I just received a reprimand!"
Norris: "My entire front wing was completely damaged."
Verstappen: “I agree, it’s unbelievable.”
Presenting his perspective, Leclerc referred to it as a "misunderstanding."
"The explanation is quite straightforward," Leclerc mentioned to a group of journalists, including representatives from Crash.net, in Barcelona.
Lando left the pit lane while I was on an active lap. When he decided to stop, I did the same, but I miscalculated my braking as I tried to pull up next to him.
"I positioned myself on the right side, trying not to block the cars behind me. I was frustrated and kept checking my mirrors to avoid causing any obstruction. Unfortunately, this led to a collision, which was primarily due to a misunderstanding."
