Max Verstappen overcomes FP1 issues to dominate the only practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen bounced back from a short pause on the track to lead the times in the sole practice session of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
The current world champion seemed to be facing difficulties when his Red Bull vehicle stalled at the base of the hill leading up to Turn 1. However, he managed to maneuver his RB20 back to the marshals, who then pushed him into the pit lane while the red flag was displayed.
The problem turned out to be insignificant, allowing Red Bull to quickly get him back on the track.
Max Verstappen recorded the quickest lap time of the session, clocking in at 1 minute and 5.685 seconds on soft tires, putting him 0.276 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri from McLaren.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, driving Ferraris, finished in third and fourth place, trailing Verstappen by almost four-tenths of a second.
Lewis Hamilton dominated the first practice session, maintaining a leading position. The seven-time world champion was just 0.5 seconds behind the top time, achieving his best lap on hard compound tires.
Esteban Ocon secured the sixth position for Alpine, while Lance Stroll of Aston Martin and George Russell of Mercedes, who recorded his quickest lap on hard tires just like his teammate Lewis Hamilton, followed him.
Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten for Red Bull and Aston Martin.
Sergio Perez secured the 12th-fastest time even with soft tires, whereas Lando Norris was on track for a competitive lap until he veered into the gravel at the exit of Turn 4.
The sprint qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring is scheduled for 4:30 PM local time.
