Max Verstappen Addresses ‘Loose’ Red Bull Complaints After Spanish GP Practice; Perez Struggles Continue
Max Verstappen discusses his "loose" Red Bull radio issues during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix, offering insights into his performance on Friday.
Max Verstappen appeared unconcerned about his Red Bull Formula 1 car's "loose" handling during Friday's practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, noting that they were just experimenting with different car configurations.
Over the team radio, Verstappen was heard expressing dissatisfaction about his car's instability on at least two separate occasions.
The initial radio communication stated, "The car tends to lose grip when exiting turns, generally feels strange with understeer in the middle of the corner, and lacks responsiveness."
Shortly thereafter, he mentioned, "The car is still unstable… I require the other wing."
It quickly became clear that Red Bull was testing various rear wing setups until the second practice session.
The Dutch driver secured fifth place in the standings, trailing Lewis Hamilton's fastest lap by more than 0.2 seconds.
Notably, Verstappen posted the fastest times in both the initial and last sectors, yet fell behind in the middle sector of the lap.
Clarifying his vague grievances, Verstappen explained: "We experimented with several different setups during FP1 and FP2. We were simply trying to make some adjustments. Fortunately, I believe the day went more smoothly without any problems, which is exactly what we wanted."
“Currently, the focus is on making some minor adjustments to the car. This is pretty standard.”
When questioned regarding Red Bull's enhancements, he responded: "They were quite minor. Nothing significant. Up to this point, everything seems usual."
Red Bull driver Sergio Perez had a challenging day, finishing in 13th place.
Perez has been experiencing a challenging streak with consecutive race retirements, and his prospects for a strong finish this weekend have been further hindered by a three-position grid penalty from the previous race.
Reflecting on his day in Spain, Perez mentioned: "I had a good start to the day, but during the second practice session, we made several adjustments and lost our way. There are many aspects to review."
“We made numerous adjustments and thoroughly examined the car. With any luck, we'll select the optimal components for tomorrow.”
