Marcus Armstrong Joins DAMS: Ferrari F1 Junior Targets 2021 F2 Championship
Ferrari Formula 1 trainee Marcus Armstrong is set to join DAMS, the reigning champions of FIA Formula 2, for the 2021 season.
The driver from the Ferrari Academy has parted ways with ART Grand Prix and will now be racing for another French team, DAMS, as he enters his second season in the direct feeder series to F1.
Armstrong, who finished second in the 2019 FIA Formula 3 championship, began his first season in Formula 2 impressively with two podium finishes in the initial four races. However, his performance declined as the season progressed, ultimately ending the year in a less-than-ideal 13th place overall.
The young racer from New Zealand, aged 20, participated in the post-season tests held in Bahrain last December with the DAMS team. He is now targeting a championship win this year, hoping to build on his previous success when he claimed the Italian F4 title in 2017.
Armstrong expressed his excitement about joining DAMS, stating that their collaboration had been anticipated for a while, as there was significant interest in partnering last season. He noted that Formula 2 is a highly competitive series, and with only eight events, it is crucial to begin strongly with a seasoned team accustomed to winning.
"DAMS has a long-standing and impressive history in GP2 and F2, making it one of the top teams to join. Despite the brief period I've been with them, it's evident that they excel at maximizing individual potential and possess the necessary resources to meet my needs precisely."
"We're targeting the championship. We've had conversations and agreed that finishing second isn't acceptable for me, and they share this goal completely. The competition will be tough, but I believe that with the right support and a strong team, I can achieve remarkable results."
Last season, DAMS dropped to the eighth position in the team rankings and secured only one race win, a stark contrast to their 2019 F2 championship triumph.
Joint team owners Gregory and Olivier Driot expressed their excitement by saying, "We are thrilled to have Marcus join DAMS. We have been monitoring his career and achievements for many years, and we are pleased to collaborate with him this season."
"This year will be crucial for both of us. Given Marcus' past performance, it's clear that one of our primary goals is to compete for the titles."
Marcus participated in the 2020 post-season test in Bahrain, driving for our team and providing excellent feedback to the engineers. This experience was beneficial for him to familiarize himself with the team before the 2021 season, and so far, everything has been encouraging.
"Marcus is entering his second season in Formula 2 with high aspirations, and so does DAMS. The team clinched the championship title in 2019 and aims to reclaim its top position. We are eagerly anticipating the start of the season in Bahrain."
