Rising Star Theo Pourchaire Graduates to Formula 2 with ART Grand Prix for 2021 Season
Theo Pourchaire, who finished second in Formula 3, has been elevated to Formula 2 by ART Grand Prix for the 2021 season.
At just 17 years old, the young racer shocked the F3 paddock by becoming the youngest race winner in the championship's history during the second round of the 2020 season (he was 16 at the time), and later went on to contend for the title.
Pourchaire, affiliated with the Sauber Academy, built on his groundbreaking first win by securing another triumph in the subsequent race in Hungary. He also achieved six more podium finishes, narrowly missing the championship title by only three points to Oscar Piastri, who ultimately claimed the championship.
The French driver concluded his prosperous 2020 by participating in two F2 events with HWA Racelab towards the end of the year. He then secured a full-time promotion to the highest level of junior motorsport with ART GP, the team he had previously driven for in F3.
Pourchaire expressed his delight at remaining with ART Grand Prix, after participating in the post-season F2 tests with the French team. He acknowledged that ART Grand Prix offered him the chance to compete in F3 the previous year and is now supporting his journey towards Formula 1 by competing in F2.
"My goal remains unchanged this year; I am still striving to reach the top. I want to express my gratitude to Sauber Academy, ART Grand Prix, my sponsors, and my family. I feel completely prepared for the upcoming season."
“I might be the youngest competitor in the F2 championship this year, so my objective will be to gather extensive experience and improve consistently over the course of the season.”
Before his impressive debut season in Formula 3, Pourchaire won consecutive championships in the junior French F4 series, and the next year, he secured the ADAC F4 title.
ART GP's team principal, Sebastien Philippe, commented on Theo's impressive journey in motorsports. He highlighted Theo's achievements, noting that he became the F4 champion in 2019 and finished last season as the runner-up in F3. Philippe emphasized that, apart from his final standings, Theo's development and performance in a challenging environment and against tough competition were particularly commendable.
Théo had no reason to stay in F3 for another season, so moving up to F2 is the natural progression of our partnership. Although it's a significant leap, I believe his skill, drive, and eagerness to learn will help him succeed in this new challenge.
