FIA Rebrands GP2 as Formula 2 in Major Single-Seater Shake-Up for 2017
F2 to succeed GP2 in 2017
The World Motor Sport Council has announced that the GP2 Series will be rebranded as FIA Formula 2 for the 2017 season, with the first race scheduled in Bahrain on April 15.
Since 2005, GP2 has served as the main feeder series for Formula 1. However, there have been speculations that it might be rebranded as Formula 2, aligning with FIA president Jean Todt's efforts to restructure the single-seater racing categories.
On Thursday, the FIA announced that the name change had received approval after consultations with the Formula One Group, which is currently under the ownership of Liberty Media.
A statement announced that the World Motor Sport Council has sanctioned the establishment of the FIA Formula 2 Championship starting in 2017. The statement further explained that the FIA has come to terms with the Formula One Group to transform the GP2 Series into the FIA Formula 2. This new series will accompany the FIA Formula One World Championship on all but one event date.
The 2017 Formula 2 schedule mirrors the previously announced GP2 calendar, featuring 10 rounds as a support series for Formula 1 and including an independent event at Jerez on October 8.
The GP3 series will not undergo any modifications for the year 2017 and will continue to be a part of eight Formula 2 events
