Marc Marquez Hails Moto3 Leader David Alonso as a ‘Sponge’ with Bright MotoGP Future

The eight-time world champion shares his thoughts on the Moto3 points leader
Marc Marquez, a rider for Gresini MotoGP, recently described David Alonso, who is leading the Moto3 championship by a significant margin, as "a sponge" after a joint training session with the Colombian rider.
Late last month, Marquez joined a track day event on sports bikes at Spain's Aspar circuit. He was accompanied by Alex Marquez, Ivan Ortola, Jaume Masia, Red Bull Rookies Cup competitor Maximo Quiles, and Alonso.
The incident occurred after a short interaction between Marc Marquez and Alonso at the Red Bull Ring earlier in August.
When questioned regarding Alonso, Marquez commended the 18-year-old for his skill in accepting advice and showing noticeable improvement because of it.
"Alonso absorbs knowledge like a sponge," Marquez remarked.
He’s a racer I was practicing with, along with Maximo Quiles. Both of them are extremely young and gifted.
"At the start of the day, you give them some advice, and by the end of the day, they're outperforming you."
“This is quite pleasant.”
"Both of them, particularly David, put forth immense effort during training. Reflecting on my own career, I've experienced numerous crashes, dedicated countless hours to practice, and achieved many victories. Yet, I still rely on the youthful energy in those intense 35-degree training sessions to push myself to the limit."
"They shared that enthusiasm with me, and I found it very enjoyable."
Alonso, now in his second season of grand prix racing, leads the Moto3 championship, holding a 70-point advantage over Dani Holgado after 13 rounds in the 2024 season.
The Aspar team has recently revealed that Alonso will be moving up to their Moto2 lineup for the 2025 season, taking the place of Jake Dixon, who is set to join Marc VDS.
On Wednesday, it was also announced by the team that Holgado will be partnering with Alonso in Moto2. Previously, the two were team-mates at Aspar in the Junior Moto3 World Championship, where Holgado secured the championship title in 2021.
