Marc Marquez Ends Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Reflects on Emotional Victory
Marc Marquez admitted to placing significant pressure on himself to achieve an ideal performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. He revealed that during the Sprint race, he couldn’t fully enjoy the experience as he was aware of the day's importance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn't record a lap time in the Warm Up session, the only one he didn't lead, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez expressed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4kg."
"With each passing step, the burden on my back grew heavier and heavier, making this victory feel extraordinary. The moment I won, my thoughts raced to the journey we had taken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a newcomer, aimed to give my best, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and continue to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he commented. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. During extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate team who were more distressed than I was made all the difference."
“It was an unusual celebration since the excitement was higher in other races, like when we celebrated second or third places, compared to today, which was more about emotion than adrenaline.”
After leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt a bit of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of stress today," he stated. "As you could tell from the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the pace, it seems like you can handle everything, you appear consistent and intelligent; but you're the same person. Without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and stay competitive with the leading contenders."
Marquez views this win as being on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which had marked his first success since he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it on par with 2021 in Germany," commented Marquez.
"When facing numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of the wins changes."
"Indeed, I have won 60 times, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an extra layer of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He recognized that opportunities will come their way. However, he noted that contending for the championship is a different matter, requiring continued effort and hard work.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
