Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted he "put a lot of pressure on himself" to have an "ideal" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP. He mentioned that during the Sprint race, he didn't have much fun as he was aware of the day's significance.
Last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win, calling the weekend "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed in the Sprint race with a commanding performance, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the post-race press briefing. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I made the decision with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez shared his feelings about the emotional journey he experienced during nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he had when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top category.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was tough to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, achieving this victory felt unbelievable. My thoughts instantly turned to the entire journey we had taken, all the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. I came in as a rookie rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals now and will continue to push forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But more than the podium, the Gresini team's garage is always entertaining and cheerful; it's always a celebration with them."
"The main factor was the people surrounding me. In tough and challenging times, having a genuinely compassionate team who, in some ways, felt the struggle even more than I did, truly made a significant impact."
"It was an unusual celebration because in other races we felt more adrenaline — celebrating second or third places — but today it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
“I felt a lot of stress today,” he remarked. “As you observed in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. If you're fast, it seems like you can handle things well, remain steady, and act wisely; however, if you lack speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Having secured victory, Marquez ranks this win alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez remarked, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of each win changes."
"Indeed, I have achieved 60 wins, yet those two triumphs, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They provide a unique kind of confidence and an additional boost of self-assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding smoothly and easily, staying very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that they will have their chances. However, competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
